Inside Atlanta: Zac Brown Band’s guitarist, Coy Bowles, shares his favorite spots in Atlanta

We're back with our series Inside Atlanta—each week, we sit down with influential locals to talk about what Atlanta means to them. Today we’re chatting with Coy Bowles, guitarist in the Zac Brown Band. A Georgia native, Bowles has called Atlanta home for over a decade. His path to country star was a windy one – he started out with a major in biology before realizing he loved music too much and couldn’t do what he loved in a lab. So, he transferred to Georgia State University and graduated with a degree in Jazz Studies instead.

He happened to meet a guy named Zac Brown while at University of West Georgia, kept in touch, and the rest is history. These days, he’s not just a guitar player, Bowles is also a published children’s book author. Today we get a tour of The Big Peach led by Bowles himself.

I live in… “Druid Hills. I lived here when I went to college, and it’s the perfect location. There’s access to Decatur, downtown, Buckhead and there’s a real neighborly vibe.”

I Wish People Knew… “Atlanta has a collective quality and creativity to it – and it’s not for show, it has soul. If it doesn’t have soul, it doesn’t work in Atlanta.”

You Can Find Me… “at Northside Tavern. It’s the coolest bar I’ve been to, and I cut my teeth there. I hope it lasts forever.”

It’s Dinner Time, I’m Headed to…5Church, opened by my friend RJ Cooper. It’s one of the biggest restaurants and an unbelievable space in the belly of Atlanta.”

Clock Strikes 5’oclock, I’m Drinking… “a Mexican beer at Red Pepper Taqueria with some guacamole – I also love to watch sports there.”

If I had to Stay in a Hotel, I’d Check Into… “the Ritz Carlton at Lake Oconee. They have the best lakeside pool you could ever want and it feels like an upscale lodge.”

Atlanta’s Best Kept Secret is…  “its antique shopping. Paris on Ponce is great for furniture and knickknacks, and there’s an Antique District in Brookhaven.”

When I’m Playing Tourist I go to…Nuevo Laredo for Mexican or Umi for sushi. Then I hit the BeltLine and Piedmont Park. I also like to cruise through Buckhead to look at the houses.”

I Get My Sweat On… “training with Dirty South Fit and running the steps at Piedmont Park. Running steps keeps me more interested than just running!”

I Love Spending My Money at… “local guitar shops, like Atlanta Discount Music and Righteous Guitars. I love supporting local music shops.”
