The winter season in Metro Detroit is typically cold and snowy, but things start looking up in March as spring officially begins. The average temperature for the month is 37 degrees, which is a nice jump from February and positively balmy compared to January. March also sees a little less snow over the course of the month; but don't be lulled into a false sense of security with spring on the way. March occupies the fourth spot on the list of Detroit area's 10 heaviest snow storms.

Temperatures

Typically, March definitely sees a thaw. The average temperature range is 28.5 to 45.2 degrees. That's not to say there are no exceptions; Detroit has seen both highs of 86 degrees and lows of -4 in the month. The year in which March saw its lowest average temperatures—since we started recording these things—was in 1877, when the average temperature during the month was 25.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

Snow?

That all depends. The average amount of snow Detroit sees in March is 5.4 inches. Even so, there are some notable exceptions. The most snow ever recorded for the month was 30.2 inches in 1900. The fourth heaviest snow storm in the Detroit area occurred in 2008, when 21 inches of the white stuff fell.
