    The winter season in Metro Detroit is typically cold and snowy, but things start looking up in March as spring officially begins. The average temperature for the month is 36.1 degrees, which is a nice jump from February and positively balmy compared to January. March also sees a little less snow over the course of the month; but don't be lulled into a false sense of security with spring on the way. March occupies the 4th spot on the list of Detroit area's 10 heaviest snow storms.

    Temperatures

    Typically, March definitely sees a thaw. On average, 20.4 days of the month see temperatures of 32 degrees or lower, but that means 10.6 days are a little warmer. In fact, the average temperature range is 28.5 to 43.8 degrees. That's not to say there are no exceptions. In fact, Detroit has seen both highs of 86 degrees and lows of -4 in the month. The year in which March saw its lowest average temperatures -- since we started recording these things -- was in 1877, when the average...MORE temperature during the month was 25.9 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Snow?

    That all depends. The average amount of snow Detroit sees in March is 5.5 inches. Even so, there are some notable exceptions. The most snow ever recorded for the month was 30.2 inches in 1900. The fourth heaviest snow storm in the Detroit area occurred on March 4th and 5th in 1900, when 16.1 inches of the white stuff fell.

    Average Temperatures and April Weather in Detroit

    The spring season in southeast Michigan typically starts in April, but nothing is guaranteed. The average temperature in April is 48.5 degrees. Snow turns mostly into rain in April, but there are always exceptions. In fact, the biggest snow storm in Detroit's recorded history took place on April 6th, 1886, at least according to the National Weather Service's list of Detroit area's 10 heaviest snow storms. The storm brought 24.5 inches of snow in one day.

    Temperatures

    When it comes to "typical," April is anything but in Detroit. One thing is certain, however, winter is on its way out. On average, only 6.2 days of the month see temperatures of 32 degrees or lower. In fact, the average temperature range is 39.3 to 57.7 degrees. That's not to say there are no exceptions. In fact, Detroit has seen both highs of 89 degrees and lows of 10 in the month. The year in which April saw its lowest average temperature -- since we started recording these things -- was in 1874,...MORE when the average temperature during the month was 37.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Snow? Rain? More?

    That all depends. On average, 12 days of the month have some type of precipitation -- snow, sleet, rain -- for a total of 2.7 inches. The average amount of rainy days in the month is 13, while the average amount of snowy days is 1.6. The change over from cold to warm temperatures spawns something else in April: tornadoes. Three of Michigan's biggest and most deadly tornadoes took place in April.

    Sunshine on a Cloudy Day?

    According to NOAA National Data Centers, the sun peaks out more and more in April and the possibility of sunshine is about 54%. Out of 30 days in the month, Detroit typically sees six clear days, eight partly-cloudy days and 16 cloudy days.

    May Weather in Detroit

    The spring season in southeast Michigan is in full swing in May with longer days, warmer temperatures and milder weather. While snow is very rare in May, it has been known to happen. In fact, 6.0 inches of the white stuff fell in May in 1923.

    Temperatures

    On average, only 0.1 days of the month see temperatures of 32 degrees or lower. In fact, the average temperature range is 49.6 to 69.4 degrees. That's not to say there are no exceptions. In fact, Detroit has seen both highs of 95 degrees and lows of 25 in the month. The year in which May saw its lowest average temperature -- since we started recording these things -- was in 1907, when the average temperature during the month was 51.1 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Snow? Rain? More?

    That all depends. On average, 12 days of the month have some type of precipitation for a total of 3 inches -- the most of any month. The average amount of rainy days in the month is 11, The change over from cold to warm temperatures spawns something else in May:...MORE tornadoes. Three of Michigan's biggest and most deadly tornadoes took place in May.

    Sunshine on a Cloudy Day?

    According to NOAA National Data Centers, the sun is less of a stranger in May and the possibility of sunshine is about 61%. Out of 31 days in the month, Detroit typically sees seven clear days, 10 partly-cloudy days and 14 cloudy days.

    Spring is making way for summer in June with warmer temperatures and longer days. The average temperature in June is 69.4 degrees. While the sun is often out and strong, the month also has its fair share of spring showers and thunderstorms. According to the National Weather Service's list of the 20 Wettest/Driest Mays in Detroit, 8.31 inches of rain fell in June in 1992.

    Temperatures

    The month may represent the transition into spring, but that doesn't mean its days aren't as hot as in July or August. On average, 3.3 days of the month see temperatures of 90 degrees or above. In fact, the average temperature range is 59.7 to 79.1 degrees. That's not to say there are no exceptions. In fact, Detroit has seen both highs of 104 degrees and lows of 36 in the month. The year in which June saw its highest average temperature -- since we started recording these things -- was in 1933, when the average temperature during the month was 74.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Rain?

    On average, 10 days...MORE of the month have some type of precipitation -- snow, sleet, rain -- for a total of 2.7 inches. The average amount of rainy days in the month is 10 and the average relative humidity is 67.3%. Tornadoes continue to be a concern in June. In fact, the state's worse tornado took place on June 8th in 1953 and three other June tornadoes occupy spots on the state's top 10 list.

    According to NOAA National Data Centers, the sun finally comes out in full force in June and the possibility of sunshine is about 66%. Out of 30 days in the month, Detroit typically sees eight clear days, 11 partly-cloudy days and 11 cloudy days.
