The Wingate by Wyndham Manhattan Midtown is a compact (six rooms per floor) newer hotel near Penn Station in New York City. Located on 35th Street, the Wingate by Wyndham Manhattan Midtown provides mid-level accommodations at reasonable rates for business travelers. The hotel was not as fresh as some I’ve stayed in, but it was completely adequate for a business travel. The service was friendly and attentive, the facilities in reasonable (but not perfect) order, and the location was solid. I would recommend the Wingate by Wyndham Manhattan Midtown to business travelers who want to save a bit of money, be in a convenient location, and have a reasonable room and services.
The Wingate by Wyndham Manhattan Midtown is located just a few blocks away from Penn Station, and is convenient to public transportation, shops and restaurants, and nearby tourist sites.
The hotel is one of the newer, tall-thin hotels that have sprung up all over Manhattan. It has a welcoming, if not small, lobby, a nice staff, and decent-sized rooms (well, actually large rooms for New York City).
During my stay, I stayed in a double room on one of the upper floors in the back of the hotel. The room itself was very quiet (nice in Manhattan) and reasonably well maintained, but there were small glitches. There were stains on the hallway carpet, dirty windows in the room, and a loud bathroom fan. No glitches were enough to interfere with my trip, but they did make it clear I wasn’t staying at a Hyatt or Marriott. Otherwise, my room was nicely done, spacious, and had a good desk, nice beds, and both a microware and refrigerator, as well as an in-room safe.
Business Traveler Perspective
The hotel offers free Wi-Fi and wired Internet. I found the Wi-Fi service reasonable, but spotty.
One big issue for me was the lack of adequate phone reception. I was unable to make or receive calls from my room (in the back of the hotel), which was definitely a problem. I’m assuming that other rooms in the front of hotel would have better reception, but perhaps be a bit noisier (mine was quiet).
The hotel provides a free breakfast buffet (which I found well done, and fairly standard). For lunch and dinners, guests can visit Asura Asian Bistro (attached to the hotel) or one of the many nearby restaurants.
Meetings and Events
The Wingate by Wyndham Manhattan Midtown is basically a compact hotel in New York City, so you’re not going to head there for a big meeting or to hold a large conference there. However, it is appropriate for smaller meetings or functions, or as a location to stay at during larger events.
The hotel is close to the Jacob Javits Convention Center, as well as Penn Station and other public transportation. In terms of event space, the hotel has one boardroom-type meeting room with 195 square feet of space. It can accommodate up to ten people. The room includes boardroom table, chairs, 42-inch TV, Internet, and AV support. Catering services can be arranged with one of the nearby restaurants, if needed.
