WildHorn Outfitters’ Sand Escape Beach Blanket is worth the investment because of how easy it is to fold up and carry with you. But it’s also lightweight and dries quickly when wet.
We purchased the WildHorn Outfitters Sand Escape Beach Blanket so our reviewer could put it to the test. Keep reading for our full product review.
When there’s sun to soak up and sand castles to build, no one wants to fuss with keeping a beach blanket weighted down. That’s precisely why the WildHorn Outfitters Sand Escape Beach Blanket is unique among oversized towels and blankets for the beach: It comes with its own built-in sand pockets so you can set anchor and then step out to sea. To see if the blanket really is easy to deploy and pack up again, we tested it for ourselves. We evaluated factors like material, texture, comfort, and portability. Is this supposedly travel-friendly blanket worth the price? Read on to find out.
This blanket is made with parachute nylon. This fabric is thin and lightweight, but it’s durable and resistant to tears or snags from keys or hooks. The material isn't breathable; we tended to sweat when our skin was in to contact with the nylon. It pulls some moisture or water from your skin but it doesn't do a great job at fully absorbing the way a towel or cloth blanket might. It does, however, dry quickly because air moves under it easily.
When sitting in the hot sun, the fabric can get very hot. It may be too hot for those with sensitive skin, such as children. Once we sat on it, however, it cooled to the touch.
Lightweight blankets can quickly become airborne when a gust of wind soars across the shore. To keep from losing our new beach blanket, we took advantage of its clever feature: corner pockets that can be filled with sand to form anchors.
A few handfuls were all we needed—we just had to remember to dump them before beginning to pack the blanket back into its bag. In our tests, we discovered that we could also use one of the pockets as a storage spot for keys, cell phones, sunscreen, and more.
In its carrying tote, the blanket measures an impressively tiny 6 x 7 inches. When fully deployed, it was a whopping 7 x 9 feet—plenty of space for a group.

Parachute nylon is smooth and comfortable against the skin. The lightweight material feels more natural than some stiff fabrics, which we like better when we’re hot and sweaty. However, the material is too thin to provide any real cushion against the sand, so avoid setting up camp on rocks, roots, or shells. If you want more cushion for your siesta, you’ll need to layer a towel underneath or on top of the beach blanket.
We found it easy enough to rinse this blanket and hang it up to dry once we returned from the beach—a huge bonus when you’re traveling and don’t have access to a washer-dryer or time to do laundry. However, you can also pop it into a cool water rinse or wash cycle in the washing machine. To protect the fabric, we air-dried this blanket as instructed, and it was ready to be packed into its carrying case in under an hour.
The blanket is available in six different colorways, but the overall color block look is the same, no matter the combination of colors you choose. All of the options are bold and fun for the beach, even when paired with a muted partner like gray or white. Each blanket’s carrying pouch matches one of the shades on the blanket, too. Selecting a hue might be the hardest part of deciding whether or not to buy this blanket.

The beach can claim many items, from hats to sand buckets, sandals to cell phones, but you won’t lose the carrying pouch for this blanket because it remains attached. That’s good news when a gust of wind sets every lightweight thing sailing. When we were finished for the day, we simply emptied the sand from each of the anchor pockets and packed the blanket into the bag. It compressed with each push, fitting easily back into its pouch.
This blanket may be designed for the beach, but it could be versatile enough for a variety of outdoor uses. The durable fabric and great design make the investment (around $25) worth the cost out of your pocket.
To make the price tag even sweeter, WildHorn Outfitters also offers a lifetime warranty and will repair or replace the blanket at no cost to you (restrictions apply).
Some beach blankets have a fabric and design that is reminiscent of a beach towel, while others, like this one from WildHorn Outfitters, feature a more industrial, durable style. We compared the WildHorn Outfitters blanket to another product we reviewed, the Ricodecor Mandala Microfiber Large Round Beach Blanket, to weigh the pros and cons of each.
We took advantage of its clever feature: corner pockets that can be filled with sand to form anchors.
A few key differences: The WildHorn Outfitters blanket is not absorbent, so it won’t wick away any residual ocean water. But what it lacks in absorbency it makes up for in size. The blanket measures 7 x 9 feet, compared to the about 5-foot round Ricdecor blanket. What’s more, the WildHorn Outfitters blanket comes in six great, fresh solid colors. The round beach blanket also has options, but they’re all bold patterns, no solids.
For its easy-to-carry compact size alone, this blanket is worth the investment. But because it also happens to be a great option for beach days because of its durable fabric and sand anchor design, it’s even better for people who plan to spend a lot of time at the shore.
