If you’re traveling to or from Houston, there’s a good chance you’ll fly through George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in the northern region of the greater Houston area. Traveling involves enough logistics to make your head spin. To take some of the pressure off, here are a few lodging options within five miles of the airport that include a range of price points and amenities. These are especially ideal if you won’t be renting a car, since they are so close to the terminals.
Houston Airport Marriott
Houston Airport Marriott is as close as you can get to IAH — in fact, the two are connected. Trams run underground between the hotel and all terminals of the airport. This is particularly handy for a quick trip with tight turnaround times or a trip where you might forgo renting a car. If you do rent a car, parking at the hotel for hotel guests is complimentary, as is airport shuttle service should you choose not to use the tram.
The hotel underwent an extensive renovation in 2016, and the space and 562 guest rooms are light, modern and airy. Food is available in the hotel at Flight’s Lounge and Grill, a casual restaurant that focuses on local sourcing. The kitchen and bar will deliver food outside to the saltwater swimming pool on site as well, which is situated near the fitness center.
During your stay, check the status of your flight on monitors located throughout the hotel. If you’re in town for business, there’s a business center and meeting rooms available.
While it is common for room rates here to be above $200 per night, not all amenities typically offered for free to hotel guests are complimentary at this Marriott location, so budget accordingly if staying here. Wi-fi costs a minimum of $12.95/day, except for in the lobby or other public spaces where it is free. Breakfast options begin at $18.00.
Note: No pets are allowed at this hotel, except for service animals.
DoubleTree by Hilton
The DoubleTree, just south of IAH, takes on a warmer, cozier feel. Many of the hotel’s guest rooms overlook pine trees and the swimming pool and whirlpool outside. This hotel, like the Marriott, has significant event spaces available, so depending on the date of your stay it is possible to run into crowds at the Starbucks inside or other food and drink areas. Room rates can be affected by this as well, and are typically cheaper on weekends than on weekdays.
Complimentary shuttle service is offered to the airport, just a few minutes away. Free parking is available to guests as well.
The main spots to eat and drink at the DoubleTree are Oakley’s and Derrick’s Saloon. Oakley’s services breakfast and lunch in buffet and a la carte form. Derrick’s is more rustic, with a sports bar feel and pool tables available for use.
Note: This hotel also welcomes service animals, but no other pets.
La Quinta East
If you’re not in town for business and looking for a lower room rate while still getting ample amenities, the La Quinta might be a good choice. Located near the eastern portion of the airport, the IAH location is a short, free shuttle ride from the airport, and it’s likely you can book a room for under $100 per night. This hotel also offers free parking.
This 78-room, brightly decorated hotel is more family-friendly in that there are no business meeting spaces. The family pup and other pets are welcome here as well for no extra fee. A pool and hot tub are available for guests outside, and there is a small fitness room inside.
It is more budget-friendly, with free breakfast — both of the hot and cold variety — offered for each night of stay. If you end up with outside food, most rooms are equipped with a mini-fridge and microwave. Wi-fi is free as well here.
The Wyndham Super 8 IAH West/Greenspoint is likely the best bang for your buck within five miles of the airport. Room rates are in the $50-70 per night range, and there is no extra fee for pets. Rooms are accessed through the lobby, not from outside.
The Super 8 includes free Wi-fi, free breakfast and free parking. If space is needed between you and your travel mates, adjoining rooms are available, or you can sneak down to the fitness room or outdoor pool.
One note about this hotel: Shuttle service to and from the airport is not offered. However, a ride-share like Uber shouldn’t cost more than $10-15 each way. Additionally, longer-term parking is available if you wish to leave your car at the hotel before flying out of the airport.
