Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! is now open in the former Tower of Terror structure in Disney California Adventure. The new ride brings an all-new story based on the Marvel characters to the iconic tower. Park guests walk through the fortress-like museum of the mysterious Collector, who is keeping his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy, as prisoners. Guests board a gantry lift which launches them into a daring adventure with new visual and audio effects enhancing the breathtaking free fall sensation to create a variety of ride experiences. The ride is programmed to offer multiple, random and unique ride experiences in which the rise and fall of the gantry lift rocks to the beat of music inspired by the film’s popular soundtrack.

"Frozen - Live" Musical Premieres at Disney California Adventure

The new musical, Frozen - Live at the Hyperion, premiered May 27, 2016, at the Hyperion Theater in Disney California Adventure. The show immerses audiences in the emotional journey of Anna and Elsa, keeping true to the movie storyline while adding all of the excitement of live theater and big dance numbers. The musical adaptation includes elaborate costumes and sets, featuring the giant doors replicated from the film. Animated scenic backdrops extend around the theatre walls, wrapping around the audience. Stunning special effects bring Elsa's freezing powers to life. Show-stopping production numbers include the elaborately choreographed coronation ball and Olaf's delightful fantasy "In summer," populated by dancing beachgoers. Olaf and Sven are seamlessly embodied by their respective puppeteers. With 107 actors playing 24 roles, you can see it over and over and never see the same combination of people on stage.

Frozen - Live at the Hyperion uses the FASTPASS system, but you'll need to arrive plenty early to get one.

    World of Color Dessert Party

Disneyland Resort invited me recently to try their new World of Color Dessert Party, a new offering where you can actually sit at a table and enjoy a selection of pastries and cheeses right in the viewing area adjacent to the fountain for World of Color.

For $79 including tax and tip, it's a pricey ticket for a dessert and cheese plate, even with one alcoholic and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages and cool light-up cups for the kids to take home, but as the only real option for seeing the World of Color show seated and with refreshments, it really is delightful. If you're gung-ho for the desserts, I have to say we appreciated the cheese, breadsticks and grapes more than most of the desserts, but the Mickey Mouse coconut macaroon was a hit.

Each table seats four, so if you have more or less, you may be seated with strangers if it's fully booked. They start seating people about 45 minutes before the show and people started lining up to be seated probably an hour before that. It took over half hour to get everyone to their tables so we were only seated a few minutes before the show started. It would feel like a better value if you could be seated earlier and have more time to enjoy it and didn't have to wait in line to sit. After the 22-minute World of Color show, we were told we could take as long as we wanted at the table, but they were cleaning around us and the park was closing, so you really couldn't hang out for long.

I've seen the World of Color show a number of times, and seated with drinks and food beats standing in the shower zone hands down, but for $79, they should offer dinner, because who really needs 5 desserts, even if they were great ones, which they weren't. Hopefully, they'll improve with practice.

Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters Now Open in Cars Land

Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters is now open at Disney California Adventure. The new ride features mini Italian roadsters - in the style of late 1950s micro cars - in an orchestrated Italian dance. Each car has its own routine during each song, with multiple songs, so each rider has a different experience. If you ride multiple times, you'll have different moves each time, but it's a similar experience anywhere on the floor.  Unlike the hover tires that they replaced, you don't have any control over where these cars go, but they're not on a track. Watching them make their dance formations is almost as fun as riding.
