Finding the perfect wedding dress for your special day can be a nerve-wracking and expensive process, especially if you plan on getting a custom-made gown. Fortunately, Thailand has a number of great bridal shops and tailors that offer well-made and relatively inexpensive western-style dresses.
However, when it comes to finding the right designer or bridal shop to make your wedding dress, there are a few things to keep in mind, especially if you are considering going to Thailand to have your dress custom-fit.
You should check local and international reviews of these custom tailors—especially in places like Bangkok that are frequently visited by destination wedding brides—to find the right bridal shop or dress designer for you.
Pick a Designer or Shop With a Good Reputation
If you know people in Bangkok, having a wedding gown custom-made is a great option. There are lots of shops all over Bangkok—particularly in the Phahurat (near Chinatown and Thong Lor areas)—that specialize in wedding gowns. There are also smaller designers, such as Khun Nit at Ganit who make custom-designed wedding gowns and some boutique tailor shops, such as Julie Thai Cotton and Silk that do, too.
However, you'll want to avoid going to a run-of-the-mill tailor shop for your wedding gown. Some Bangkok tailors may advertise wedding gowns along with their custom-made shirts and suits, but while their tailors and seamstresses will probably be able to execute a simple dress well, these folks are not experts at wedding dresses.
Even if you're having your bridesmaid dresses made in Thailand, you probably want to use a specialized dressmaker for your wedding gown. Also, tailoring shops in Thailand often employ high-pressure sales tactics to get you to commit to buying something, which is the last thing you want to deal with when you’re shopping for a wedding gown.
Plan Your Time
While a tailor can make you a suit in 24 hours if absolutely necessary, very few good designers can make a custom-tailored wedding dress in less than a week.
Wedding gown design involves multiple fittings, which is important to ensure that every detail looks fantastic on the bride. Most designers require at least six weeks from start to finish, and that’s if you happen to get them during a slow period.
Still, there are some shops in Bangkok that can churn out an elegant dress in a matter of several days, but the expedited tailoring will cost you extra.
How Much Will You Save?
Having a good designer make you a custom-made wedding gown is not cheap, whether you do it at home in America (or wherever home is) or in Thailand. It will definitely be cheaper in Bangkok, but you should still expect to pay a decent price for a well-made custom look.
Like with custom-made bridesmaid dresses, having your wedding gown custom-made in Thailand makes the most sense if you want a design that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford or are looking for a one-of-a-kind wedding gown.
Still, you also have to factor in the cost of travel, accommodations, and shipping (unless you're getting married in Thailand) as you shouldn't really purchase a custom-made wedding dress without going to several fittings during its construction.
