Air Travel Deals Take Off

Edited by Benet Wilson

There's a hard-core group of people who love air travel but hate to pay full fares ever. The good news is that thanks to the internet, there are plenty of websites that offer great deals for your next trip. Below are seven websites to get you started!

Google Flights is a search engine on steroids. Not only does it do traditional flight searches, it offer variations. If you want to go to Europe but don't know exactly where, Google the words "flights to Europe" and a map pops up with fares to major cities, where you can  filter your options. The Best Flights box breaks down the best flight and the fastest, highlighting the best travel options in green. You can also see fares based on calendar dates and it will track flights to see if fares drop.

CheapOair is a hybrid travel agency that allows travelers to book flights online, on mobile apps by phone or live chat. The website also lists sample fare deals from cities selected by customers. It also offers hotel and car rental deals, discounted vacation packages, last-minute flight bargains, great prices on one-way flight deals and low fares for student travel.

This has become one of my go-to websites for amazing airfare bargains. It focuses on "mistake" airfares that can yield roundtrip fares like: Washington, D.C., to Puerto Rico for $221; New York City to Istanbul for $178; and Atlanta to Hong Kong for $444. You can visit the website, get notifications via Facebook or have fare alerts emailed to you directly. We got bargain flights to Tokyo using this site. But you need to be ready to pounce, because the fares don't last long.

Airfarewatchdog not only searches for the cheapest fares, but also checks for things like seat availability, web-only specials, fares from nearby airports and lists prices from airlines like Southwest Airlines and Allegiant Air. Travelers can also get email fare alerts from any cities they choose and get notified if fares drop.
