Weather in Boston: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature

Fall in Boston

Boston is known for having four distinct seasons, with noticeable differences between spring, summer, fall, and winter. When you visit will depend on what you’re looking to see in the city, and your preference on weather will be a factor in that decision.

Spring and fall are when you’ll find the most comfortable weather, with highs in the 60s in both May and October. December through February are when you can expect to see the coldest temps, but if you’re heading to Boston looking for snow, this is your best bet.

Summer brings sunshine and hot weather, which is a beautiful time to be in New England, but if it’s too hot, plan to head to the beach.

Spring in Boston

Spring is known as being one of the best times of year in Boston, but keep in mind that the early days of spring in March could still feel like winter, as it has the second highest average snowfall amount compared to other months. April showers are a reality in Boston – this tends to be the rainiest month, though Boston doesn’t get incredible amounts of rain. In late-April and May, you’ll likely experience the best of spring with the sun shining during the day and temperatures in the 60s.

Keep in mind that it will still get chilly at night.

What to pack: Your packing list from March to May will differ quite a bit. In March, you’ll likely still want to pack your winter jacket. As you get into April and May, spring layers will be your go-to. Be prepared for T-shirt or long-sleeve weather during the day, and throw on a jacket at night.

Average Temperatures by Month:

  • March: 41 degrees F high/27 degrees F low
  • April: 60 degrees F high/44 degrees F low

Summer in Boston

Boston summers tend to reach the high 70s and low 80s for the most part. These months are either comfortably hot and sunny or unbearably humid, and it’s hard to tell what you’ll get. August is the driest month, as it typically sees the least precipitation all year. On hot days, you may want to get out of the city, and hit the beach – this is when the ocean is the warmest, though it’s still quite chilly to those not used to it. Nights are comfortable at this time of year in the mid-60s.

What to pack: Standard summer attire applies in Boston from June through August. Go for shorts, tank tops, and comfortable sandals or sneakers if you’ll be walking around the city. Bring a lightweight sweater for cooler evenings as needed.

  • July: 80 degrees F high/65 degrees F low

Fall in Boston

Fall in Boston is arguably the most popular season for tourism in Boston, as the weather is still nice and warm for most of it, and you can experience foliage that can only be seen in New England.

September can still feel like summer, while November is when you may experience the city’s first snowfall, so while these three months are technically “fall,” there can be significant differences between each one when it comes to weather.

What to pack: Fall is a season you’ll want to pack layers for, as it can be a bit unpredictable and varies from month to month. Even if it’s warm during the day in September or October, it could get cool at night, so bring a fall jacket along. As you get into November, look out for temperature drops, as you’ll start to experience signs of winter coming.

Average Temperatures by Month:

  • September: 74 degrees F high/60 degrees F low
  • October: 69 degrees F high/54 degrees F low
  • November: 51 degrees F high/36 degrees F low
