Weather in Udaipur: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature

Udaipur, Rajasthan

Regal Udaipur is situated in India's renowned desert state, Rajasthan. Therefore, it may come as a surprise to learn that the city experiences an annual monsoon. However, Udaipur is separated from the Thar Desert by the southern end of the Aravalli Range and has a semi-arid local steppe climate instead of an extreme desert climate. This also means that the city is largely spared from the worst of the summer heat that occurs elsewhere in the state, although May and early June are quite hot. Due to Udaipur's desert location, the monsoon produces less rain and humidity when compared to other parts of India too. Nippy nights and early mornings are offset by gloriously warm and sunny days in winter. In addition, Udaipur's proximity to the Equator means there's only about 1.5 hours variation in sunrise and sunset times throughout the year. The city gets 10.5 hours of daylight on the shortest day in December, and about 13.5 hours daylight on the longest day in June.

Here's all you need to know about the weather in Udaipur, including temperatures from month to month, so you can plan your trip in accordance with the best time to visit.

Winter in Udaipur

Weather-wise, winter is a pleasant time of the year in Udaipur. Overnight temperatures drop considerably in December but evenings are still comfortable and don't become crisp until January. The winter chill is caused by the northerly air blowing down from the mountainous Himalayan region. In January, you can expect it to feel cold from around 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., between sunset and sunrise. On occasion, there's mist in the mornings, before warmer temperatures kick in about 10 a.m. and remain until sunset. The retreat of winter is noticeable in mid-February when mornings are milder, the afternoons heat up, and evenings turn balmy.

What to Pack: Pants, jeans, shirts, T-shirts, long dresses, long-sleeved pullovers, and a jacket, sweater, or shawl. Ideally bring clothes that you can layer.

Udaipur's climate transitions straight from winter into summer in March. There's not much difference in the weather in the first two weeks of March as compared to February. However, in the second half of the month, temperatures are quick to rise in the mornings. The major upsurge in heat begins in April and reaches its peak in May. There's relief in the evenings in April, but May evenings remain toasty and mornings are warm too. The heat continues unabated into the first two weeks of June before the approaching monsoon brings a change in weather. Udaipur does have summer heatwaves, caused by gusty, dry, westerly Loo winds. Although the city isn't affected as badly as other places in Rajasthan, sometimes this can push the temperature as high as 113 degrees F (45 degrees C).

Wet Season in Udaipur

Udaipur only receives significant rainfall in the monsoon season, from late June through September end. Most of the rain occurs during July and August when there's a 40 to 50 percent chance of a wet day. However, even when it's not raining, you can expect the skies to be cloudy and overcast. The cloud coverage rapidly starts appearing in mid-June, peaks at the end of July, and clears up in mid-September along with the rain. The monsoon brings dust, thunderstorms, and a refreshing breeze with its arrival in late June. Although Udaipur doesn't have constant oppressive humidity during the monsoon, days can get muggy and sultry, especially in late July and the first half of August when it's wettest. As the monsoon withdraws in the latter half of September, there's only a 10 to 25 percent chance of a wet day remaining. The temperature stays warm throughout the monsoon season, even at night.

What to Pack: An umbrella, raincoat, waterproof footwear, knee-length pants in dark colors, and fabrics that dry easily. Our monsoon season packing list for India provides a comprehensive list.
