Weather in Dubai: Climate, Seasons, and Average Monthly Temperature

People tend to think of Dubai as having a very hot and humid desert climate and the promise of warmth and sun definitely attracts a lot of tourists to the city. However, depending on when you travel to Dubai, the weather conditions can be cooler than you'd expect. Winters in the Emirati capital city are especially enjoyable with lower humidity levels and low temperatures around 66 F (19 C). Visitors tend to flock to Dubai between October and April for outdoor activities such as dune bashing, sailing, and attending an assortment of festivals.

Temperatures start to rise in April and hot weather persists until the beginning of October. During this time, the weather is extremely hot, including a high level of humidity and excruciatingly hot winds. Rainfall is also infrequent during the summer months, but the windy conditions guarantee that there are frequent dust storms.

Summer

During the summer months of June to August, the weather in Dubai is pretty hot and humid. It is particularly dry in the month of June with an average rainfall of 0 inches. The hottest month of the year is August when the average high temperature typically exceeds 109 F (43 C) It is not uncommon to have high temperatures reaching 113-115 F (43-46 C) during the summer months of July and August.

Due to the hot summer heat, it’s best to stick with indoor activities such as visiting the numerous shopping malls in Dubai or doing indoor activities like Ski Dubai. There aren’t many outdoor summer festival activities due to the humidity during this time. If you are on a budget, then the summer months are a great time to visit due to discounted tour and activity prices. Nevertheless, note that certain activities will be unavailable during this time like Dinner in the Sky.

Additionally, during the summer season is when the windy Shamal (North in Arabic) winds become extreme, thus causing gusty winds and sandstorms. The windy, sandy conditions tend to reduce visibility so it’s important to allow for ample spacing while driving during these times.

What to Pack: Due to the summer heat, plenty of sunscreen is a must. Also, consider packing a baseball cap or a big, floppy sun hat for ladies.

Fall

The fall months from September until November, while still hot, are quite bearable. It is an ideal time to visit because while still relatively hot, it’s not too humid to visit and enjoy outdoor activities likr lounging by one of the stunning pools or visiting the pristine beaches in Dubai.

What to Pack: For the travelers that may want to venture out in the evenings yachting at the marina or relaxing on a boat, a lightweight sweater or scarf is recommended.

Winter

During the winter months between December and March is the rainy period, including short downpours and thunderstorms on occasions. The average rainfall for the year is 25 days, with most of these rainy days occurring during the winter months.

The winter months are the best time to visit. Not only can you celebrate New Year’s Eve in one of the most celebrated cities in the world, but it’s also the perfect time to enjoy outdoor activities like camping, a desert safari, or relaxing on the beach.

What to Pack: Consider packing yoga clothes for those who wake up early enough to do some yoga poses at sunrise on the beach or a lightweight jacket for cool evenings.

Spring

Spring in Dubai is a great time to visit the city also. It lasts from March to May, when temperatures start its climb towards summer highs. In April, temperatures increase to the 90s Fahrenheit, so warm clothing is no longer necessary during the day.

By May, heat strengthens in the afternoon and evening low are around 77 F (25 C). Starting in late spring is when locals and tourists alike tend to do more outdoor activities in the late afternoon in order to be protected from the extreme afternoon heat.

What to Pack: As with summer months, it’s necessary to have sunscreen in the spring in order to protect from sunburn or heatstroke.
