TripSavvy's fact-checking RilindH/Getty Images Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, is located on the country's central Atlantic Coast. Its climate is classified as Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Temperature variations are moderated by the presence of the offshore Canary Current, making Casablanca a much cooler choice in peak summer than interior cities like Marrakesh. In terms of month-to-month temperature ranges, Casablanca's climate is very similar to that of coastal Los Angeles. For reliable heat and abundant sunshine, the best time to travel to Casablanca is June to August. If you prefer slightly cooler temperatures, the shoulder months (May and September) are a great alternative with little of the rainfall that characterizes the rest of the year from late fall to early spring. Fast Climate Facts Hottest Month: August (80 degrees)Coldest Month: January (48 degrees)Wettest Month: December (3.0 inches average rainfall)Best Month for Swimming: August (73.9 degrees average sea temperature) Spring in Casablanca From March to May, Casablanca sees mild daytime temperatures that increase slightly throughout the season, while rainfall decreases proportionately. March is a cool, wet month, with average temperatures of around 59.5 degrees F and 2.0 inches of rain. In contrast, May sees daily mean temperatures of 65.5 F and only 0.7 inches of rainfall. Later in the season, temperatures frequently rise above 70 degrees. It’s a great time to travel for those that plan on spending the majority of their time exploring Casablanca’s Art Deco-inspired Quartier Habous and 19th-century Old Town. It’s still a bit chilly for long days on the beach, especially since water temperatures hover at around 64 degrees at this time of year. What to Pack: Layers are key when packing for spring in Casablanca since temperatures can be unpredictable. You will need a warm sweater or two and a light raincoat and t-shirts, cool pants, and sun protection. If you plan on swimming or going surfing, you may want to bring (or rent) a thin wetsuit. Remember that Casablanca, like the rest of Morocco, is a Muslim city, and visitors of both sexes should dress conservatively to avoid offending local culture. Average Temperatures by Month: March: 59.5 degrees April: 61 degrees May: 65.5 degrees Summer in Casablanca Summer is usually considered peak tourist season in Casablanca, both for foreigners and Moroccans visiting on vacation from elsewhere. People come for the beautiful weather defined by warm temperatures and very little rainfall (if any). June is the coolest month in summer, with daily mean temperatures of 69.6 degrees F. It’s also the wettest month of the season, with 0.2 inches of rainfall. July and August both record negligible rainfall and daily mean temperatures of around 73.5 degrees F. Humidity hovers around the 80 percent mark. Sea temperatures are pleasant at around 72 degrees F, making this the best time of year for a beach vacation. What to Pack: If you plan on visiting Casablanca in peak summer, it’s a pretty safe bet to leave your raincoat at home. Instead, pack plenty of light clothing, including some long-sleeved shirts and long pants or skirts for visiting the city’s famous Hassan II Mosque. Don’t forget your swimsuit (whether you take a dip in the sea or your hotel pool is up to you). Sun protection is key at this time of year, including sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sunhat. Average Temperatures by Month June: 69.6 degrees July: 73.5 degrees August: 74.5 degrees Fall in Casablanca Early fall can be one of the most pleasant times to visit Casablanca in terms of weather. September sees average temperatures of 72 degrees F and only 0.2 inches of rain. It’s a good compromise for those who want to spend some time on the beach but don’t want to get too hot while exploring the city’s souks and architectural landmarks on foot. Later in the season, rainfall increases dramatically so that November sees 3.0 inches of rain on average and is typically regarded as one of Casablanca’s wettest months. Temperatures also drop significantly as fall progresses, with November's daily mean temperature at 62 degrees F. Sea temperatures remain relatively warm at a seasonal average of around 71 degrees F—which is significantly warmer than spring and could be a deciding factor for some. What to Pack: Like springtime, fall in Casablanca requires a varied packing list. With record highs of 105 degrees F in September and record lows of 40.3 degrees F in November, you should pack for every occasion with plenty of layers and protection for both sun and rain. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the water, you may want a thin wetsuit; although for most visitors, a long-sleeved rash vest or similar will suffice. Average Temperatures by Month September: 72 degrees October: 68 degrees November: 62 degrees Winter in Casablanca Winter is typically the least popular time to visit Casablanca if the weather is your top priority. That’s because rainy days are commonplace, and temperatures are decidedly chilly (at least by Moroccan standards). December is the wettest month with 3.0 inches of rainfall, although January is not far behind with 2.5 inches. Daily mean temperatures in December and February hover around the 57 degrees mark but drop to 55.5 F in January. Although not common, temperatures have been known to fall to freezing in all three winter months, with January holding the record low at 32 degrees F. Nevertheless, there are many attractions in Casablanca that don’t depend on good weather, including some of the best restaurants, art galleries, shopping malls and nightclubs in the country. What to Pack: If you decide to visit Casablanca in winter, make sure to bring plenty of warm clothing, including a decent raincoat and waterproof shoes. With that being said, it’s worth packing a few lighter layers as well, since unseasonably warm days are not uncommon. Planning on surfing the winter swell? You’ll want a thicker wetsuit so you can spend longer in the water.
