For vintage aficionados, Red Velvet Vintage in the South Main Arts District is one of the city’s chicest and most fun outposts. Everything about the store, from its retro storefront on a retro street, with horse-drawn carriages clopping past the picture window, screams throwback. Here you’ll find vintage and vintage-inspired clothing, accessories and more, including:
- Dresses galore, from casual to full-on glam
- Everyday wear
- Belts, scarves, bags and jewelry
- Shoes and hats
- Beauty items, including fun fragrances
- Racks of affordably priced vintage finds, from ‘60s party dresses to ‘70s disco chic to ‘80s kitsch
Red Velvet is a great place to go for that special piece for a gala event or a fun night out. The store makes throwback party dresses a specialty, with vintage-inspired lines like Hell Bunny, Voodoo Vixen, Tatyana, Trashy Diva and Collectif. You can also find outerwear and swimwear here, and the store offers plus-size selections.
True vintage finds span the decades, and you never know quite what you’ll find when you stop in – anything from ‘70s maxi dresses and funkadelic pantsuits to fully lined evening gowns to 1980s off-the-shoulder cocktail couture. In the way of accessories, eye-catching vintage finds from various eras are always on the shelves, from unique brooches to intricately beaded or embroidered bags to snazzy hats.
When it comes to beauty, look for the line by Besame Cosmetics, which features among its offerings vintage, reproduction “true red” lipsticks that call to mind 1920s Hollywood starlets and vixens of the pin-up era. To appeal to the other senses, check out the fragrance line Juliette Has a Gun, termed a “gentleman’s cologne for women,” with fragrance names like Lady Vengeance, Miss Charming and Mad Madame.
This fragrance line touts its high-quality ingredients, and the price points match that claim. However, shoppers will find items at Red Velvet that match a range of budgets and tastes.
The store’s team of “vintage vixens” is well-equipped to answer questions and offer advice. A row of roomy dressing rooms in the back offers space for trying out retro finds. Also, a rack at the rear of the store typically has sale and clearance items on offer.
