More than 400 wines are made right in Maryland, meaning there's a vino to suit every palate. Although the bulk is made in the mountains of Western Maryland and the plains of the Chesapeake, there are many vineyards and wineries close to Baltimore that offer taste testings and tours.

Boordy Vineyards

12820 Long Green Pike, Hydes, MD

The oldest Maryland winery can be found just a half hour from downtown Baltimore in northeastern Baltimore County. Wines, champagne, and port are crafted in the vineyard's 19th-century barn. Tours and tastings are available, and the vineyard hosts concerts during summer evenings.

Serpent Ridge Vineyard

2962 Nicodemus Rd., Westminster, MD

Newly opened in 2009, Serpent Ridge Vineyard in Carroll County specializes in small lots of handmade wine from grabs grown in their vineyard, nearby vineyards, and other carefully chosen sites. Stop in for a tasting on Saturdays and Sundays.

Basignani Winery

15722 Falls Rd., Sparks, MD

Just north of Hunt Valley, Basignani Winery produces a variety of wines using traditional cellar methods and old-world viticulture. Their wines are unfiltered in an effort to preserve character. Tour the winery and vineyards or taste Basignani's wine.

Loew Vineyards

14001 Liberty Rd., Mt. Airy, MD

Established in 1982, this vineyard is set on the hills of the Maryland countryside, where the Loew family grows vinifera and French-American grapes. Stroll through the vineyards or sample Loew's bottled wines.

DeJon Vineyards

5300 Hydes Rd., Hydes, MD

A converted barn in the Long Green Valley is the setting for sipping red and white wines made from this vineyard, a new arrival on the winery scene. Besides daily wine tastings, the vineyard hosts live musicians during select evenings.

Harford Vineyard & Winery

1311 West Jarrettsville Rd., Forest Hill, MD

Established in 2003, Harford Vineyard & Winery is set on a 20-acre farm in the Maryland countryside. In addition to tastings, the vineyard sells grapes, juice, and supplies to those who want to make their own vino at home.

Fiore Winery

3026 Whiteford Rd., Pylesville, MD

Known as "The Maryland Wine with an Italian Accent," the family behind Fiore Winery comes from nearly twenty generations of Italian winemaking tradition. Luckily, you don't have to travel across the ocean to taste their wines or learn about their wine-making process.

Black Ankle Vineyards

14463 Black Ankle Rd., Mount Airy, MD

With a name that evokes imagery of traditional winemakers using their feet to crush grapes, Black Ankle Vineyards believes that "a truly great wine comes only from a truly great vineyard." If you're planning a tasting, keep in mind live music is performed on Friday evenings.
