Veterans Day began in 1918 as Armistice Day, and marked the one year anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. In 1954, the day was officially changed as a day to honor all veterans.

New Mexico Veterans Art Show
Come out and support your local artists, who in this case, happen to be veterans. The show opens at 6 p.m. Friday, November 11, and runs several weekends: November 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show is located at the Expo New Mexico Fairgrounds Fine Arts Building.
Veterans Parade and Memorial Ceremony in Albuquerque
There will be a parade featuring restored military vehicles that begins at 9 a.m. on Veteran's Day, November 11. The parade begins at Bullhead Park on south San Pedro, then moves northwest past the Veterans Hospital onto Ridgecrest. The parade will continue east along Gibson to Louisiana, where it will turn north and head to Veterans Memorial Park at 1100 Louisiana NE. At 10 a.m., there will be a musical prelude, and at 11 a.m., a ceremony will ensue. The speaker will be Denise Rohan, candidate for National Commander of the American Legion, and keynote by Brigadier General Judy Griego.
Park at the Kirtland Federal Credit Union at Louisiana and Gibson. Shuttles will be available.

Specials for Veterans
When planning on a meal at one of the restaurants with special offers, be sure to bring along your proof of military service.
Call ahead to verify participation and to be sure you have the ID they require. Be sure to call the restaurant before leaving home to be sure they are taking part. Some of the nationwide chains offer the meals only at certain locations.
On November 11th, from open to close, veterans and active duty military can choose from a free signature Thank You Meal menu that includes some of Applebee’s favorite items. Must present valid Veteran’s form of identification or be in uniform.

California Pizza Kitchen
On November 11, all veterans or active duty military personnel will be able to get any pizza from our menu for free (dine-in only). Please come in uniform or bring your military ID or other proof of service.
On November 11 from 3 p.m. to close, get a buy one get one free special.
Get a slice of chocolate fudge cake. Must show military proof of service.
All active, inactive and retired military personnel,at all participating Denny’s restaurants nationwide, diners with a valid military ID will receive a free Grand Slam breakfast, from 5 a.m. to noon.
Golden Corral Free Meal
The Golden Corral offers military with ID a free meal on November 14, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Veterans and active duty personnel can get free red, white and blue pancakes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
LongHorn Steakhouse is giving away an appetizer or dessert to veterans on November 11. Bring proof of service.
Olive Garden offers veterans a free entree on November 11. Choose from a special menu for your entree, and your meal includes garlic sticks and a choice of soup or salad.
Free Red’s Tavern Double and Bottomless Steak Fries for all Red Robin guests with a military ID or proof of service.
Village Inn will offer veterans and active military personnel a V.I.B. breakfast on November 11. Check to see which locations are participating.

National Museum of Nuclear Science and History
The museum is offers free admission on November 11 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., to all service members, past and present, who show military ID.
The home store will offer discounts to veterans on in-store purchases year round. The offer is good for any in-stock and special order purchase up to $5,000. The discount is available any day of the year for Albuquerque metro stores. Present a valid military ID or other proof of service. Sales via Lowes.com, previous sales, and purchases of services or gift cards are not eligible.
Home Depot has made a commitment to veterans in helping them repair their homes and more. Home Depot wants to ensure that every veteran has a place to call home.
Free B&B Stay
Inns and B&Bs throughout North America will be saying thanks to those who have served their country by having them wake up at a B&B on veterans day. Good for active and retired military and vets plus one guest on November 10 and 11.
Free Entry to National Parks
National parks will waive their entry fees in honor of Veteran's Day.
New Mexico Gold Star Family License Plate
New Mexico families who have lost a family member to combat action are eligible to receive a free Gold Star license plate. The first plate is free, with a four plate limit per family. These are also free, but families are responsible for at $17 plate registration fee. Applicants should contact their nearest office of the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services to apply.

The New Mexico Rail Runner will run on a Saturday schedule. Veterans with a VA card can get an annual pass to ride the New Mexico Rail Runner for free.
