Uglich is a small town of about 37,000 residents on the Volga River 136 miles north of Moscow. The view of the two huge churches as river ships sail into Uglich is breathtaking. Uglich is the last port of call on river journeys from St. Petersburg to Moscow. River cruises usually stopover in a small village, a UNESCO Heritage Site (Kizhi Island), and a mid-sized city (Yaroslavl). So, along with many miles of countryside, cruise travelers see a diverse section of Russia.

Uglich has a long storied history. It was a favorite of Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century. His son Dmitry was murdered in Uglich in 1591, and the brilliant red Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood was built to honor the slain young prince.

It's easy to do a walking tour of Uglich from the ship and still have plenty of time for shopping at the numerous vendors' stands between the town and the ship....MORE Uglich is a peaceful, quiet town, and most of us agreed we would liked to have stayed longer.

The beautiful Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood and the Transfiguration Cathedral stand guard on the banks of the Volga River in Uglich.

The tourist shopping area in Uglich was conveniently located near the ship. It had many good buys and variety of Russian artwork and souvenirs.

Uglich is famous for its cheese and its watches, which are sold under the "Chaika" brand name. We were cautioned to not buy watches from the street vendors since they were imitation.
