Where to Get Toronto’s Best Desserts

Here are the places where you can get the best sweet treats in Toronto

Not everyone has a sweet tooth, but if you do, you’re likely always (if not most of the time) on the hunt for your next sugar-laden treat. Whether your go-to dessert of choice comes in the form of a soft and chewy cookie, fruit-filled pie, chocolate-draped cake, or icing-coated cupcake – there’s a place in Toronto where you’ll be able to find it. With that in mind, here are nine places to get Toronto’s best desserts.

If eclairs are one of your sweet treats of choice, you’re going to want to pay a visit to Nugateau, which specializes in eclairs of all kinds (even a few savoury varieties). It’s actually Toronto’s first éclair-only pastry shop – so it’s no surprise they know what they’re doing. The visually-stunning pastries are prepared using French techniques without the use of any artificial flavourings. Eclairs come in a variety of decadent flavours and are hand crafted, making them almost too pretty to eat (almost). Some tempting flavours include vanilla-pecan, lemon bergamot meringue, pistachio and cookies ‘n milk.

You can get your hands on a variety of desserts and pastries at Nadege, but it’s their gorgeous (and totally delicious) macarons that should not be missed. Step inside one of their locations and just try not to swoon as you get a look at the pastel-hued almond meringue beauties staring back at you from behind glass. Choose from flavours ranging from salted caramel and rose, to chocolate, pistachio and cotton candy.

There are a few Toronto locations of Sweet Jesus, a dessert-focused establishment that aims to push the boundaries of what a typical sweet treat is supposed to look and taste like. They want you to visit and have something new and exciting (and most definitely Instagram-worthy). Frozen treats are the main focus here, but don’t expect a simple bowl of ice cream. Decadent house made soft serve comes piled high in a variety of toppings, from cookie chunks to cotton candy.

This family run business has been turning out must-try desserts, made in-house from scratch, since 2007 and there are now four locations to satisfy your need for a sugar fix. Sweet Olenkas also offers a variety of vegan and gluten-free options among their many cakes, brownies, ice creams and cakesters (bigger than a cupcake, but smaller than a traditional cake).

Wanda’s Pie in the Sky is a great place to go for a variety of things, including a hearty vegetarian lunch menu and weekend brunch. But since we’re focused on dessert, we’ll stick with the sweet stuff – in this case – pie. There’s a staggering variety to choose from depending on the season (which, of course, means you can keep coming back). Some to watch for include pumpkin, cherry-apricot, pear-cranberry and peach praline just to name a few. But if pie isn’t your thing (or your current craving), there’s also cakes, tarts, brownies, cookies and cupcakes to indulge in.

    The Bake Shoppe

It’s pretty tough to walk into The Bake Shoppe and not leave with something (if not a few things). Everything you see in the welcoming shop is baked in-house, from scratch with organic and local ingredients whenever possible. Cupcakes are always a worthwhile choice, but they also make homemade pop tarts and homemade Passion Flakies, both of which are filled with jams from Kitten & the Bear.

    Glory Hole Doughnuts

As the name suggests, this is a prime destination in the city to satisfy your doughnut craving. The Parkdale hot spot has been serving up handmade doughnuts since 2012 and the extensive menu changes seasonally. They make yeast, cake and vegan doughnuts in a variety of flavours. Vegan flavours rotate, but in terms of yeast doughnuts you might come across orange-pistachio or salted caramel, and with the cake variety, there might be a lemon-ricotta on offer or a birthday cake doughnut. No matter what you order, you really can’t go wrong.

But let’s get back to those aforementioned cookies for a second. Those get turned into delicious ice cream sandwiches – something you definitely don’t want to miss out on a hot day – or any day, really.

For anyone who ranks chocolate as one of their top sweet treats of choice, Soma should be high on your radar. There are two locations to choose from where you'll find some of the best quality chocolate in the city. Bars and a wide variety of creative truffles are a mainstay, but you can also find cookies, toffee, gelato and drinking chocolate (a definite must-try for a chocoholic).
