In 2014 Topgolf opened its first Arizona location in Scottsdale; the second in Gilbert (East Valley) followed quickly during that same year. Based in Texas, where they have nearly half of their locations, the one in Scottsdale was not developed from an existing driving range or golf property. It was planned and built from scratch on Native American land right near the Talking Stick Resort.

Topgolf is much more than just a driving range, although it is that, too. It is golf entertainment for people of all ages and golf abilities. At Topgolf there are 102 bays on three levels, each one designed to host up to six people. Golf clubs and special golf balls with embedded chips are provided. You, along with your date, your kids, your mom or your co-workers pick a game from an electronic system and take turns hitting golf balls at distance targets. The chip inside the golf ball registers when you hit a target and points are given. Think of it as like playing darts in a bowling alley...MORE environment!

This is not simulated golf. You are not hitting balls at a screen with pictures of St. Andrews on it. You are using real clubs, real balls, at a real driving range. Targets range in distance from 20 yards to 215 yards.

    Pricing last updated: July 2016

Everyone has to pay a one-time $5 fee to get into the system. You are provided a membership card. When you come to Topgolf you will check in and pay for your bay.

    Hourly Rates

Hourly rates vary between $25 per hour to $45 per hour, depending on the time of day. The earlier you play, the cheaper it is. Your bay rental includes up to six people who can play.

    Membership Plans

There are several monthly membership plans offered (minimum length of commitment may apply). You can have unlimited play Monday through Friday until noon for you and up to five guests. Not an early riser or you work during the week? You can have unlimited play Sunday through Thursday, from 10 p.m. to close for you and up to five guests. If you can't be tied into a scheduled but you know you'll want to practice or play often you can get $200 worth of play during the month for $150. A Platinum monthly membership gives you unlimited play during Platinum hours, as well as other perks...MORE and VIP benefits. Are you active-duty police, fire, military or EMS? Ask about the Heroes Discount.

All monthly membership plans come with a $1,000 hole-in-one prize if you get one in the brown, blue or white targets. One hole-in-one could pay for a lot of golf at Topgolf!

Topgolf uses Callaway clubs, and they are available at every bay for everyone for free. Junior clubs and left-handed clubs are also available.

Your membership card not only tracks your activity and high scores (the low ones, too, unfortunately) but it is also a stored value card.

What Else Happens, Plus My Tips

Each bay at Topgolf has its own TV, so you don't have to miss sports talk or whatever the game of the day is.

Need a break? Coming with people who really aren't interested in hitting golf balls? In addition to the bar and restaurant there's a nice lounge with game tables, TVs and video games.

On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights live bands or DJs entertain.

My Take - On the Plus Side

    • Topgolf presents a fun, climate-controlled attraction suitable for dates or family outings.
    • Easy access -- you never have to bend down -- to as many golf balls as you can hit in your allotted time and electronic scoring make the game simple.
    • At your first visit, or any time you need help, you can have a staffer provide an explanation of how it works and how to use the technology.
    • The restaurant served better food than your average attraction. I can highly recommend the burger! It might even be a nice choice for lunch when you aren't even playing golf, no membership required to dine here.
    • You don't have...MORE to stop and sit down at the restaurant if you don't want to. Roving servers take orders and deliver food and beverage to the bays. Don't forget to tip, as you would any server.
    • I see Topgolf as a viable option for a corporate retreat, girls day getaway, holiday or bridal party, or any other occasion where people want to get together and have some fun.

    My Take - Be Aware

    • An evening of TopGolf fun can get expensive, especially if you are just going by yourself or with one friend or a date.
    • At peak times, expect a wait that might be two hours or more. That's what the bar is for.
    • Although no golf expertise is required, it certainly helps to know a little about how to swing a golf club or the game will quickly become dull/frustrating. It's no fun throwing all gutter balls at a bowling alley. If you can't hit a golf ball such that it goes up in the air and forward, at the very least you should try to get one of the upper bays. At least your ball will fall off the platform!
    • At my visit, there was limited ability to tee up a golf ball to hit a driver. The plastic tees were less than 1/2 inch off the surface. You can't use your own tees in any way.

13 Things to Know About Topgolf

13 Things to Know Before You Head Out to Topgolf

    1. No reservations are accepted (groups of 12 or more may book through the Events Department). Platinum members get priority access to bays, and members may purchase priority passes; that simply puts them at the top of thee waiting list if a bay is not available.

    2. Dress code? Golf attire is nice but not required. There's no real dress code here, and golf shoes are not necessary. Spikeless golf shoes are fine if you have them, but most people wear running shoes/sneakers to play.

    3. About the waiting list. At peak times you can expect to wait, sometimes quite a while. That's where the lounge and the bar come into play! Relax. This is supposed to be fun. If you are a semi-pro trying to get in your 500 shots today, and you are in a rush, you'd better not arrive at 8 p.m. on a Friday night.

    4. Food and beverages are served in the restaurant, but also at the bays.

    5. The golf bays at the facility are open-air. They are misted in the...MORE summer and heated in the winter. The restaurant, bar and lounge are indoors, as are the meeting rooms.

    6. Real golf clubs are provided for free with your membership. You are, however welcome to bring your own clubs and many people do.

    7. There are several different games from which to choose, from basic (like bowling) to more complicated games for the experienced Topgolf-er.

    8. No outside food or beverages are permitted.

    9. Topgolf is a totally nonsmoking facility.

    10. Check online for specials, theme parties, kids' clinics and camps, etc.

    11. Guests under 14 require adult supervision. Groups of kids 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

    12. There's an app for that! If you download the Topgolf app to your smartphone, you can add money to your card, see your personal game history, see deals, see the menu and change the TV station at your bay.

    13. Remember how I compared Topgolf to bowling? Well, you can join a league here, too. Just like bowling leagues, there are fees and prizes. Thyere are 2- and 4-person leagues.
