Texas is home to some of the most famous private golf courses. However, the Lone Star State also boasts some of the nation's best public courses. Every major Texas city has several top shelf public courses, while others are scattered across the state. Earning Golf Digest's "Best New Golf Course" distinction upon its opening in 1998, Cypresswood Golf Club is situated in a heavily wooded area of north Houston, very near Bush International Airport. Cypresswood offers two 18-hole courses -- The Traditions Course and The Cypress Course

The Quarry Golf Course

The Quarry is one of the most unique -- and best known -- golf courses in Texas. The back nine of this unique San Antonio golf course is located within the confines of a century old rock quarry, hence the name - Quarry Golf Course. The front nine is laid out links-style while the back nine, due to its location inside a quarry, utilizes elevated tee boxes and greens.

La Cantera Golf Course

La Cantera Hill Country Resort has been rated as one of the top golf resorts in North America. The Palmer Course at La Cantera is the first Arnold Palmer designed course in South Texas. It has been rated as one of the top public courses in America. The Resort Course at La Cantera overlooks Six Flags Fiesta Texas. La Cantera also features a Golf Academy for those who are serious about improving their game.

Horseshoe Bay Golf Course

Located on the shores of scenic Lake LBJ, just a short drive from Austin, Horseshoe Bay Resort offers all a golfer could want, including three courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. Golf magazine has named Horseshoe Bay Resort one of the top golf resorts in America, thanks largely to the quality of its courses, but also because of its numerous amenities and excellent golf packages.

Lakeway Resort Golf Course

Lakeway Resort on the shores of Lake Travis offers guest access to four private and public golf courses. Flintrock Falls Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, features breathtaking scenery, including hole #11, which is considered the most scenic hole in Texas. Falconhead Golf Course was designed by PGA course architects and carries the designation of a PGA Tour Signature Series Course. Yaupon Golf Course is best known for its lake views and elevated tee boxes, while Live Oak Golf Course offers golfers a bit of seclusion and has a reputation as a "hidden" golf course.

Tour 18 - Dallas

The unique concept of using hole layouts from 18 of America's top golf courses to make one great course has come to be known as Tour 18. This concept proved so popular there are now two Tour 18 courses in Texas - Dallas and Houston. Among some of the famous holes replicated at Tour 18 Dallas are the #11, 12 and 13 holes from Augusta National, Firestone #16, Sawgrass #17, Winged Foot #10, Doral #3, and Cherry Hills #1. For many golfers, this is the closest they will come to playing these famous courses -- and they are able to do it all in one round, right here in Dallas!

Cedar Crest Golf Course

One of Texas' oldest golf courses, Dallas' Cedar Crest Golf Course originally opened as a private country club in 1916. Known as one of the finer courses in the southern United States at the time, Cedar Crest was the site of the 1927 PGA Championship. Today, it remains a popular course for Dallas area golfers and, despite its age and history, offers all the modern amenities of a top flight golf courses, thanks to multi-million dollar renovations and upgrades over the last decade.

Bear Creek Golf Club

Located just a short drive from the Dallas/Ft Worth International Airport, Bear Creek Golf Club is one of Dallas' most popular public golf courses. Named one of the "Top 50 Resort Courses in America" by Golf Digest, Bear Creek has hosted numerous tournaments, including PGA Tour Qualifiers, the Texas State Open, AJGA National Tournament, and the PGA National Golf Series. Bear Creek consists of two 18-hole courses -- the East Course and the West Course. Both courses were designed by the renown Ted Robinson.
