In health-conscious Boulder, Colorado, greasy burger joints are few and far between, which makes the sandwich a common go-to for residents and visitors in search of a quick, tasty meal. As a result, Boulder’s selection of sub shops rivals that of any other town. So to sort it all out, here’s a list of the top sandwich joints in Boulder:

As delicious as the name sounds. In the crowded world of college-town sub shops, Snarf’s takes the cake. Boasting two Boulder locations – on Pearl and Arapahoe – the menu at Snarf’s features a great selection of toasted sandwiches with your choice of toppings. Plus they show a remarkable commitment to the environment, using almost all compostable materials. Pick up the Italian or BBQ Smoked Brisket sub and make your stomach especially happy.

Located in the heart of the Hill, Half Fast Subs serves up terrific sandwiches in an energetic atmosphere. Their gigantic sub menu ensures there’s something for everyone, and their spacious outdoor patio is great for lunch on sunny days. The options are almost limitless, but if you’re in an adventurous mood, try the Stuffed Roast Beef sandwich – mashed potatoes and roast beef on warm French bread. And if you’re looking to get a little crazy, their long island pitchers are top notch.

Salvaggio’s is a classic Italian deli with three locations in town. Featuring Boar’s Head meats and cheeses, they use the best ingredients to create simple, tasty sandwiches. It can get a little spendy – usually over $10 for a full sub – but you can opt for their “roll” variety to get a round sandwich at a decent price that will still likely fill you up. Stop by their kiosk on Pearl Street Mall for a quick bite.

    Deli Zone

Deli Zone is modeled after a Brooklyn-style deli, with almost as big a selection of breakfast sandwiches as lunch subs. The hot sandwiches – which comprise most of the menu – are made on a well-seasoned griddle then toasted. Grab a Baby Kong for just the right amount of egg and sausage in the morning.

With a good selection of hot and cold subs plus delicious soft cookies, Silver Mine is a no-brainer for this list. Their bread is always soft and their prices are reasonable, so it’s one of my go-to’s for lunch on workdays. Try the Georgetown or Dodge City, or if you’re in the mood for a challenge, the Mother Lode.

You’ve probably been to this one before, and it of course in no way resembles a “local” sub shop, but Jimmy John’s is too consistently good to leave off the list. There are two locations in Boulder and more in the surrounding area, and they’re well-known for being the fastest sandwich joint in the world. Feeling lazy? Opt for delivery, and the JJ’s employees will do the legwork and bike your sub to you. If you’re hungry, go for the Hunter’s Club, which is loaded with roast beef and provolone.
