Castle Paki Maui
There are so many Maui hotels and resorts to choose from. Deciding where to stay in Maui is a big decision. Should you stay in West Maui or choose a hotel or resort on Maui's southern shore? Maybe spend a night or two in Hana? All are great areas and where you stay in large part depends on where you plan on spending most of your time.
Here are some of my personal favorite places to stay on Maui. These are the places I know best, but that doesn't mean that your favorite is any less a great choice. That's why we have a section at the bottom of each page so that you can share your favorite place to stay in Maui.
Paki Maui condominium resort has long been our home away from home on Maui. We have a friend who owns a rental condominium and it, like much of the entire resort, has recently been completely renovated.
A stay at Paki Maui is a real value. Not only do you get all of the conveniences of home with bedrooms, living and dining areas, but you also have a complete kitchen which allows you to save lots of money on food. The resort has a lovely oceanside grassy area with lounge chairs and a small pool.
A concierge is located on site to help you plan your activities. If you stay at Paki Maui, be sure to get at least one dinner from the Honokowai Okazuya & Deli located right across the street.
On July 31, 2013, Castle Resorts & Hotels announced the addition of Paki Maui to its resort portfolio, effective September 1, 2013.
Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa
The amazing artwork, the best pools on Maui and grounds that are absolutely stunning, it's no wonder that the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa has the reputation for being one of Maui's top resorts.
The resort is situated on 40 meticulously landscaped acres on Maui's beautiful Wailea Beach, voted one of the best beaches in America. The resort has 780 guestrooms, including 52 suites. The Napua Tower offers 100 rooms in a private club-area situated at the center of the hotel, featuring dedicated concierge services with upgraded guest room accommodations. Grand Wailea's guest rooms are well designed and spacious, ranging from 640 square feet to 5,500 square feet.
The Grand Wailea's Spa Grande blends Hawaiian, Eastern and European therapies. The resort features a 2000 ft. long river pool with waterfalls, slides, rapids, rope swing and the world's first water elevator.
For more information, see our feature on the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa.
Ka'anapali Beach Hotel
So many resorts claim to give the visitor a sense of family, but I've never actually seen a resort before where that is actually true. Not only does the entire staff seem like one big family with each other, but they extend that 'ohana to the guests, which is so very rare. Some resorts try but it comes across pretty fake.
At the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel it is so clearly sincere. The hotel has the honor of being Hawaii's "most Hawaiian hotel" and it is indeed one of the few places where you are totally immersed in the Hawaii experience. Some guests will be disappointed that the hotel is not the most modern on Maui, but for the hotel's loyal and numerous repeat customers, that's not the important element here.
Napili Kai Beach Resort
There are many hotels and resorts that I like. There are only a few that I really love. One of these is the Napili Kai Beach Resort. It's not a flashy place and thank goodness for that. It is, however, a very Hawaiian place.
You can't help but feel relaxed when you stay there. There's no pressure from the staff to make sure you're off and running all the time.
While I really enjoyed my stay at Napili Kai, if you're looking for a luxury resort with all the top amenities, then the Napili Kai Resort is not for you. But, if you're looking for a more laid back vacation without a lot of the hustle and bustle (and crowds) that you'll find at the larger resorts, the Napili Kai Beach Resort may be just what you're looking for.
Away from the more congested areas of Ka'anapali, Honokowai and Napili, the Kapalua Resort is situated on a century-old pineapple plantation with rolling hills, spectacular views and a beautiful beach.
The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua recently completed an extensive $180 million transformation which included a remodel of all guest rooms, a new 17,500 square foot spa, new fitness center and redesigned restaurants. The remodel also includes a 10,000 square-foot, tri-level swimming pool, with a 20,000 square-foot sundeck and a new children's pool.
Also located within the Kapalua Resort are 36 holes of championship golf on two courses, the Kapalua Golf Academy and the exciting Kapalua Adventure Center with the best zipline in Hawaii.
Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa
Privately nestled at historic Pu'u Keka'a (Black Rock) promontory, Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa's 23 oceanfront acres flow gracefully from the crest of Black Rock to the shores of world famous Ka'anapali Beach.
This section of Ka'anapali Beach offers the widest beach with the best snorkeling and scuba diving. It also is the quietest and most private part of the Ka'anapali Beach Resort, yet within easy walking distance of the central shopping and dining area of the resort, Whaler's Village.
With superb accommodations, a perfect location, a large number of activities and great restaurants including my favorite restaurant on Maui, Teppan-yaki Dan, the Sheraton Maui Resort is a fine choice for your Hawaii vacation.
For too many the journey to Hana on the Hana Highway either ends with a brief stop in Hana for lunch on the way to the Kipahulu area of Haleakala National Park - long incorrectly known as the "Seven Sacred Pools."
The smartest visitors spend at least a night in Hana at the Travaasa Hana, formerly named the Hotel Hana-Maui, an AAA Four Diamond luxury resort. As the hotel says, it's the perfect place for "a serene and enchanting escape" and great for small weddings, honeymoons and romantic getaways.
The intimate Spa at Travaasa Hana offers spectacular views of Hana Bay. Guests can enjoy the ultimate in nurturing with massage, facials and body treatments. The spa features steam rooms, cold plunge, aquatic therapy pool, lava rock whirlpool and more.
Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa
Formerly owned and operated by Outrigger Enterprises, the resort was totally renovated by Marriott several years ago to bring it up to Marriott standards. The opean air lobby, resort grounds and pool areas (including an adult only pool) are beautiful.
A beachwalk allows easy access to all of the other resorts, restaurants and within easy walking distance of the Shops at Wailea. The resort is also centrally located in the world class resort of Wailea, Maui, with golf, tennis, watersports and more.
Although large, with 8 floors, 499 rooms and 47 suites, you'll not feel at all crowded. South Maui's best luau, the Te Au Moana ("The Ocean Tide") is offered three nights a week.
Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas
Starwood has definitely done something right here. They have taken the concept of timeshare and, as Emeril Lagasse would say, "kicked it up a notch." Although a vacation ownership property, a number of villas are available for guests on a daily rate basis.
The resort is located on 14 oceanfront acres of North Kaanapali Beach. The property is as good and in many ways superior to any other on Maui. The grounds are spacious and it's easy to find a nice secluded spot. You'll never feel crowded here despite the size of the resort.
The staff is top notch. I've never met any better from the bellmen, front desk staff, poolside and restaurant staff to the resort's excellent management team.
Westin Maui Resort & Spa
Adjacent to Whalers Village in the Ka'anapali Beach Resort, the Westin Maui Resort & Spa has, what I consider, the island's most attractive resort grounds with lots of Asian influences in the artwork.
The pool areas and water slides are great for families with children. The resort's guest rooms have all been recently redone with the most modern amenities.
The Westin Maui also has two of my favorite restaurants on Maui - 'OnO Bar & Grill with its great tapas dinner menu and Tropica, the resort's signature restaurant with great sunset views and fine oceanfront dining. My only complaint about the resort is that the public areas can tend to be crowded and a bit noisy, especially in inclement weather.
