If you're going to Universal Studios Hollywood, the closest places to stay are in Burbank, Studio City, and Universal City. Because city boundaries can be quirky, there are also a couple of hotels that are close to the studios that have Los Angeles and Hollywood addresses.
It's hard to find inexpensive, nice hotels in this part of L. A. If you're on a budget, find a hotel near the MTA Red Line train and take it to Universal, saving on gas and parking as well as room rate.

The Hilton Universal City is on a hilltop, with great views. It's a big hotel with more than 450 rooms. The property is pet-friendly (with a deposit) and has lots of amenities, but they charge for parking.
It's in Universal City, within 5 minutes' walking distance of Universal.

The Garland is close to Universal Studios and Hollywood and located on 7 tree-shaded acres. Originally owned by actress Beverly Garland (which is where it gets the name), it's a sprawling property with more than 200 rooms, but it doesn't feel crowded.
It's about 1.5 miles from Universal, a 10-minute drive. Their free trolley will drop you off at Universal Studios or the Universal City metro station.
The hotel is very pet-friendly (with a fee). WiFi is free and they offer guest activities including tai chi and yoga classes. They charge for parking.Continue to 5 of 8 below.

The Tangerine is one of my favorite places to stay near Universal. It's an old-style, two-story motel with a modern flair. Desk staff are friendly, it's quiet and the rooms are both comfortable and stylish. Their breakfast options are a cut above what you'll find elsewhere, with complimentary lattes, espresso, coffee, hot chocolate and pastries from a local bakery.
Parking is free at the Tangerine and so is WiFi, but it's not pet-friendly. It's about 2.5 miles from Universal, a 10-minute drive.

This cute little 1960s-style motel has a great retro look and a fantastic neon sign out front. It's been used in a lot of films and television shows, as their little on-site hall of fame details.
The Safari Inn is located on West Olive Avenue in Burbank, about 3.5 miles and 15 minutes' drive from Universal Studios.
