If you're going to Universal Studios Hollywood, the closest places to stay are in Burbank, Studio City, and Universal City. Because city boundaries can be quirky, there are also a couple of hotels that are close to the studios that have Los Angeles and Hollywood addresses.
It's hard to find inexpensive, nice hotels in this part of L. A. If you're on a budget, find a hotel near the MTA Red Line train and take it to Universal, saving on gas and parking as well as room rate.

The Tangerine is one of my favorite places to stay near Universal. It's an old-style, two-story motel with a modern flair. Desk staff are friendly, it's quiet and the rooms are both comfortable and stylish. Their breakfast options are a cut above what you'll find elsewhere, with complimentary lattes, espresso, coffee, hot chocolate and pastries from a local bakery.
Parking is free at the Tangerine and so is WiFi, but it's not pet-friendly. It's about 2.5 miles from Universal, a 10-minute drive.
