The last Monday in May the United States celebrates Memorial Day. While the weekend is a chance to honor those who have died while serving in the U.S. Military, many also consider it the official start to summer.

In Memphis, folks celebrate the holiday with cookouts, pool parties, and other outdoor activities. Below you will find some of the best events going on around Memphis throughout Memorial Day Weekend. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to take a moment to remember those who have died for our freedoms.

Take in an All-American Baseball Game

Is there anything more American than baseball? Take in one game or four over the course of Memorial Day Weekend. Each game will be held at AutoZone Park and Saturday's and Sunday's game will conclude with an elaborate fireworks show. Tickets include access to the vast stadium with a children's fun zone, a variety of food and drink options, and even outdoor space to enjoy the first days of summer. Memphis in May’s Beale Street Music Festival has been rescheduled to October 16 to 18, 2020.

Memphis in May is a month long festival that includes the Beale Street Music Festival one weekend and a barbecue competition another. The festival culminates Memorial Day weekend with a Celebrate Memphis day. There will be live music, a parachute air show, fireworks, local food and drink, and a children's zone. The fun is taking place in Tom Lee Park.

Participate in the Great American River Run

The Great American River Run has been rescheduled to October 24, 2020. 

Closeout Memphis in May with the second annual Great American River Run 5K and half-marathon race in downtown Memphis. Check out the race maps on the Memphis in May website. The half-marathon begins at 7 a.m. and the 5K begins at 7:30 a.m. The post-race party is open to all runners and features live music, beer, and food.

Take in Music Under the Stars

As of May 5, the Memphis Botanic Garden was working on a plan to re-open. Check the website and social media pages for the most up-to-date information for Memorial Day.

The Memphis Botanic Garden hosts the annual Summer Symphony in the gardens featuring the Memphis Symphony Orchestra. There is nothing quite like starting the summer by sitting under the stars and listening to moving music. The show is from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and features Dennis DeYoung and The Music of Styx alongside the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

Listen to Jazz at The Shell

The Levitt Shell has been hosting online virtual concert series during the month of May. Find more details on the Facebook page.

The Levitt Shell is one of Memphis' most popular live music venues. Set in Overton Park, people sit on picnic blankets in the grass and listen to whomever is on stage. Sometimes there is dancing. There is always good food and even better spirits. On the Saturday of Memorial Day the venue is hosting a day of jazz. It will feature veteran performers as well as newcomers that will do their best to wow you. It's an event not to be missed.
