Bellevue Baptist is a megachurch in Cordova, Tenn., just east of Memphis that is known for its annual production of "The Singing Christmas Tree." With a membership of nearly 30,000, it is the largest church in the Memphis area and one of the largest churches in the United States. Each year, Bellevue Baptist puts on a professional-caliber production called "The Singing Christmas Tree" that draws people from all over the mid-South to see it every year.
This show sets the standard for other megachurch Christmas productions and has become an annual tradition.
"The Singing Christmas Tree" is an original play that tells a modern story all the while incorporating the story of Jesus' birth. The story is different each year and is always a family-friendly and feel-good event. The production's pinnacle is the 44-foot-tall Christmas tree filled with singers who perform Christmas carols during the play. The choir is open to students from fourth grade to college.
"The Singing Christmas Tree" Then and Now
Bellevue Baptist first presented "The Singing Christmas Tree" in 1976 at the church's previous location in Midtown Memphis. During the subsequent years and decades, the production has grown in both size and caliber and seamlessly transitioned in 1989 to the church's new home in Cordova.
Today, the show features more than 100,000 lights and more than 400 cast, choir, and orchestra members.
With its high-quality music, lights, costumes, and story, you may forget that you are attending a church production rather than a professional play or Broadway musical.
Bellevue Baptist seats more than 7,000, which helps to accommodate the tens of thousands of people who come to see one of the several "The Singing Christmas Tree" performances each year.
"The Singing Christmas Tree" 2017 Production
This year's production is titled "A Journey ... a Chance ... a Change." The story takes place at the Arravista Mountain Resort where Regina, the resort manager, is determined to make the most out of Christmas this year. However, when estranged family members, an engaged couple, and a rags-to-riches staff member enter the picture, misunderstandings and hurt feelings will surely occur. It’s part of life, right? But maybe on this journey, someone will take a chance -- a chance that might change everything.
