History of the Roxy
Opened by Lou Adler and Elmer Valentine with partners David Geffen, Elliot Roberts and Peter Asher in 1973, the club is still owned by Adler and his son Nic, who now manages the club.
When the club opened in 1973, Neil Young an his then band the short-lived Santa Monica Flyers played for the first week. Peter Gabriel and Genesis also played a run that year. Like other clubs on the Strip, the Roxy's history is the history of rock n' roll in America. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played there in 1975. Miles Davis, Jane’s Addiction, and Pearl Jam made their mark. Guns N' Roses played the Roxy before they ever had a record deal.
The acoustics that make it LA's favorite live music venue, also make it a favorite venue for recording live music, as demonstrated by the many albums and cuts recorded here. Bruce Springsteen, Frank Zappa, Warren Zevon, Bob Marley, and Social Distortion are a few of the performers who have released recordings "live from The Roxy." Fuse TV broadcast a live performance of the Red Hot Chili Peppers that they taped at The Roxy in 2011.
In addition to the line-up of world-class rockers, The Roxy brought the original stage version of the Rocky Horror Show to the US in 1974 before it was made into a movie. Paul Reubens' Pee-wee Herman character first appeared in a comedy review at the Roxy.
On the Rox, the upstairs bar above the main club, has hosted many illustrious celebrity bashes. John Belushi is reported to have partied here on the night of his fatal overdose. These days, On the Rox is as likely to be hosting more mellow acoustic sets as private rocker parties.Continue to 2 of 4 below.
