The margarita is one of the most popular cocktails on the planet, its perfection may just be in its simplicity. An authentic margarita (which actually means “daisy” in Spanish) only contains tequila, triple sec and lime juice. It is said that a Mexican bartender created the drink for an American B-movie actress. Of course, there are all kinds of variations on the classic margarita, like frozen margaritas or different flavors like mango and strawberry. Margaritas are an essential part of a Mexican vacation and are available in almost any restaurant in Cancun, but the versions served in the following restaurants and bars stand out from the crowd. Also part of a great Mexican vacation? Cancun's best taco joints and seafood restaurants.
La Joya is a gourmet Mexican restaurant located in the AAA Four Diamond resort, Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach. The ambiance is breathtaking, from the pink flowering trees and the stained glass windows to the live trio and mariachi music. Take it all in while sipping on their Cadillac margarita, made with 1800 Tequila and Grand Marnier. The restaurant is certainly serious about tequila — ask for a complimentary tasting to learn about Mexico's most famous spirit.

Surfin Burrito is beloved by both locals and visitors alike. This funky “restaurant” (patrons share picnic-table-like outdoor seating) is located in the Hotel Zone on Blvd. Kukulcan at km. 12.5. They serve cheap, delicious food and liter drinks in Styrofoam cups with tops, including margaritas, which you can order to go! Best of all, Surfin Burrito is open 24 hours a day. And according to the restaurant's Facebook page, even Guy Fieri has been to the Surfin Burrito. When it comes to colorful frozen drinks, that endorsement might just be a good thing.
