One of Albuquerque's longest running and most popular events, the Albuquerque Folk Festival brings together musicians and music lovers for a day long smorgasboard of performers and activities on the first Saturday in June. While the festival took place for many years at the New Mexico Expo, it is now housed at the Albuquerque Balloon Museum grounds.
The 2016 Folk Festival is Saturday, June 4.
What to Expect
The festival is for those who love listening to music and those who love playing it as well.
For the musicians, there are workshops designed to help instrumentalists become better, or to introduce instruments to those who might be curious about playing. For music lovers, there are four different stages where a non-stop lineup will keep the ears happy. For those who love to dance, there are many opportunities to do so. Kids can find hands-on fun and the chance to participate in song and dance. Overall, the Folk Festival brings the joy of music to everyone who visits. Its focus is on participation.
There's also a band scramble contest, jams, demonstrations, dances, performances and four stages filled with a diverse lineup of acts from morning until night.
Four stages, the Sandia, Jemez, Mt. Taylor and Unplugged Outlet, bring musical groups up throughout the day for your listening and dancing pleasure. Music begins at 10:30 a.m. and the last group goes on the stage at 9:30 p.m. You can make the day as long or short as you like, and view the schedule to see what bands you want to hear.
Groups include Bohemian pop/folk, Creole, Americana and more.
Jam with a Band is where musicians can play or sing along with great local bands. And at the hosted jam tent, there is a new host every hour. Do sing alongs to Celtic, bluegrass, folk and other musical styles.
Dance workshops include waltz, clogging, hula, Klezmer, contra, tango and more.
There are two dance tent locations, the Dance Tent and the Indoor Dance tent. There is a variety Barn Dance on Saturday night at the Indoor Dance Space, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Dancing begins in both locations at 10:30 a.m. and the last workshop is at 5:30 p.m.
Workshops will include singing, dancing, folk singing and music. There are hosted jams and jams with the Band. Workshops include instruction in folk music instruments, storytelling, puppetry and kids activities.

The festival is a great family event. Kids can play with different instruments, enjoy the puppet playhouse, and even pet instruments in the musical petting zoo.
