Brazos Bend State Park

Although it is practically located within eyesight of Houston's towering skyline, Brazos Bend State Park is an entirely different world than the concrete jungle located a few miles away. Situated along the banks of the Brazos River, Brazos Bend State Park features an impressive array of wildlife, including numerous alligators in the river and the lakes within the park's boundaries.

BBSP also offers urban anglers a quick means for melting back in time into a setting which is much more part of Houston's past than present, making Brazos Bend SP a unique outdoor experience. During spring, the warmer weather encourages all of the park's wildlife to become more active and also brings out a number of blooming wildflowers from their winter slumber.

Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site

The 293-acre Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site encompasses the site on Washington, the town which served as the Texas capitol from 1842 to 1845. Walking tours of the original townsite as well as a replica of Independence Hall are among the most popular activities. Washington-on-the-Brazos SHS is also home to the Star of the Republic Museum, which houses an impressive array of Texas Republic-era artifacts.

The Barrington Living History Farm, which features Barrington, the home of Anson Jones, Texas' last president, is an entertaining and educational attraction. However, while the spring weather makes these walking tours all the more pleasant, the big draw to Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site during spring is the myriad of wildflowers which bloom inside the park during March and April. Most years, some of the most impressive stretches of wildflowers in the state are found within Washington-on-the-Brazos SHS.
