Luggage scales are handy little devices that help jetsetters avoid surprise overweight baggage fees at the airport. As it turns out, there are plenty of versions available, too, including the Tarriss Jetsetter Digital Luggage Scale. Tarriss is a travel gear company that prides itself in providing excellent customer service and quality products, as evidenced by their 100-percent satisfaction guarantee, which is backed by their lifetime warranty (product registration required). In fact, the Tarriss website states that each scale is tested by hand before leaving the factory.

The Jettsetter Luggage Scale is touted for its durability, streamlined silhouette, as well as accurate readings, high weight capacity, and the ability to weigh in three different metrics. With all that said, this product is several dollars more than many of its competitors that do roughly the same thing—so is it really worth the price?

Performance: Simple and foolproof

With a single button and an easy-to-read digital LCD screen, the Tarriss Jetsetter Digital Luggage Scale is truly foolproof to operate. Press the on/off button to—you guessed it—turn it on, and hold it down for two seconds to turn it off. It will also power down on its own after 30 seconds to help preserve battery life (more on that later). You can easily switch metrics with this button, too. Immediately after powering on, the screen will display “8888” before it sets to zero; press the button to switch between kilograms, pounds, and stones.

Changing the battery is a bit of a pain; when it’s time to replace the watch-sized lithium CR2032, you’ll need a tiny Phillips screwdriver to open the panel.

There is room for user error when weighing (as with any digital scale), so for the most accurate reading, keep the luggage as steady as possible and hold the scale evenly as you lift. We learned this after weighing 5- and 10-pound dumbells several times, as the scale locked on weights that differed between by 0.2 to 0.4 pounds. Your safest bet is to weigh your bags several times and to err on the side of caution by keeping your luggage a few pounds lighter than the airline maximum (typically 50 pounds).

Features: Handy and user-friendly

The metric conversion can come in handy in more ways than one. Obviously, customers anywhere in the world can use the Tarriss Jetsetter. But more importantly, when traveling abroad, you can easily switch modes to the local metric so there’s no confusion when it comes to weighing your bags. Further, once the weight steadies, hold it still and the number will lock. This feature is a bit finicky, though, as it can take several seconds to lock and then it clears itself once you place your bag back on the ground.

The scale’s weight limit is 110 pounds (50 kilograms), after which the overload indicator will display “EEEE” on the digital screen. While the company claims the scale is accurate to 0.2 pounds (0.1 kilograms), they do recommend keeping your luggage at least two pounds lighter than the airline’s maximum, in case the airport scale is inaccurate.

As we mentioned before, the scale will automatically shut off after 30 seconds to preserve battery life. But, as we experienced, your scale’s battery may already be partially drained—as indicated by the icon at the top right corner of the screen—when it arrives in the mail. Changing the battery is a bit of a pain; when it’s time to replace the watch-sized lithium CR2032, you’ll need a tiny Phillips screwdriver to open the panel. It’s not impossible to do, but not the most user-friendly method if you don’t have the right tool.

Design: Sleek and functional

With a metal surface, rounded edges, and eggshell hue, this scale is streamlined and modern. At 5.3 ounces, it won’t weigh you down when it comes to packing light and can help you avoid surprise fees if your suitcase is filled with souvenirs on the way home. This device is even TSA-friendly if you prefer to keep it on hand and stash it in your carry-on

A stainless steel front and thick plastic backing ensure durability. Also, the tough nylon strap, which is long enough to wrap around thick handles, will hold up when weighing heavy loads. Unfortunately, this device does not come with a protective case, and could potentially get scratched if it’s haphazardly tossed in your luggage (full disclosure: after accidentally dropping it in our driveway, the stainless steel got dinged).

Price: Higher than most

The Tarriss scale sells for around $15. While it won’t break the bank, it’s several dollars more than the majority of its competitors which offer the same (if not more) features.

Competition: Lots of similar products

A quick search on Amazon will reveal that the Tarriss scale has plenty of competitors, including the Camry Digital Luggage Scale which offers similar features (plus a temperature reader) for half the price. The profile of this gadget is slightly bulkier, the nylon strap is shorter, and the metal face does not appear to be stainless steel, but its measurements are just as accurate. Choosing between the two models comes down to budget and aesthetic preference. But, if we were you, we’d ignore the latter and go for the Camry as it’s performance is just as reliable.

Sleek but overpriced.

The Tarriss Portable Luggage Scale is a sleek device made from quality materials. You can certainly find cheaper options, but if you’re a fan of straightforward functionality and its techie design, it may be worth the few extra dollars.
