In Downtown Phoenix the Phoenix Suns NBA basketball games, the Arizona Rattlers Arena Football games, the Phoenix Mercury WNBA basketball games, and many concerts and family events take place at Talking Stick Resort Arena (formerly US Airways Center), and America West Arena before that).
From the time it opened in 1992, it won high praise and many awards for its innovations and creativity. It became a building block upon which Phoenix downtown growth and success began.
A major renovation in 2004 further modernized the building, moved the Box Office indoors and added more glass, video screens, stadium graphics, children's area, bars, and improvements to the outdoor entertainment area where festivals and pre- and post-game activities take place.
On January 6, 2006, as the result of the merger between America West Airlines and US Airways, the venue's name was changed to US Airways Center. After the merger of US Airways and American Airlines, a new name sponsor for the arena was announced. In October 2015, Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale acquired the naming right of the stadium; it is now known as Talking Stick Resort Arena.
The stadium seats nearly 19,000 people.
Factoid: Where did the Phoenix Suns play basketball before there was a stadium in downtown Phoenix? At the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Arizona State Fairgrounds on McDowell Rd. The "Madhouse on McDowell" and the "Purple Palace" were the coliseum's nicknames in those days.
