Shopping may be the big draw for most visitors at the West County Mall in St. Louis, but parents of young children will want to check out the mall's indoor play area. It offers kids the chance to run and have fun while Mom or Dad take a much needed break.

Location & Hours

The play area is located on the lower level of the mall right outside JC Penney. It is open during regular mall hours. The play area is closed for short periods of time about twice a day for cleaning. As a parent, it's nice to know the mall is at least making an effort to keep the equipment from getting too dirty.

Size & Equipment

Keep in mind, the play area is designed for toddlers and pre-schoolers (those less than 42 inches tall) and the equipment is geared toward them. The floor and all of the toys are rubberized to help prevent injuries when someone falls. There is a tunnel to crawl through, a small bridge to go over, animals to climb on and cars to drive. The area is also surrounded by benches where parents can sit and easily see their kids.

Nearby Stores & Services

The play area is close to other kid-friendly parts of the mall. There's a family room right down the hall with changing tables, nursing rooms and a kid-sized potty and sink. Gymboree, Destination Maternity and Picture People are just a few doors down and Starbucks is right next door for those times when Mom or Dad need a boost of caffeine or a sweet snack. For a bigger meal, the food court (and kid favorite Chick-Fil-A) is directly above the play area on the second level.

When to Go

As you would expect, the play area can get really crowded on the weekends and during the holiday season. The best times to go are weekdays when the mall first opens and early afternoons before school is out.
