The Best Time to Take a Disney Cruise

While every Disney Cruise is magical, some sailings offer even more value by adding an extra dose of amazing special events and activities. It’s a terrific way to get even more for your money: an incredible Disney Cruise plus a bonus of exclusive themed entertainment. Special Halloween on the High Seas Cruises and Very Merrytime Cruises offer an extra layer of special holiday events and activities onboard. At other times of the year, select Disney Cruise sailings offer a Star Wars Day at Sea or Marvel Day at Sea, which are full-day celebrations featuring special themed experiences. In addition, families may find lower fares during the school year, with fall and early spring being good bets.

Sail on any of Disney’s four ships from early September through the end of October, and you’ll be treated to a wickedly good time on a Halloween on the High Seas Cruise. Pack your Halloween costumes and get ready for special events and activities that are always fun, not frightful. Highlights include trick-or-treating on the ship, Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party, a charmingly eerie Pumpkin tree that transforms each day, an adult costume contest, and The Nightmare Before Christmas Sing & Scream Movie. In addition, Halloween-themed movies will be shown in Buena Vista Theatre, on the Funnel Vision giant screen by the family pool, and in guest staterooms. Throughout your cruise, you’ll also have the chance to meet all your favorite Disney characters dressed in their Halloween costumes.

Available fleet-wide during the Christmas holiday season from mid-November through the third week in December, Very Merrytime Cruises offer a bounty of special holiday events and activities. ‘Tis the season for lavish holiday decorations on board Disney ships, to the tune of 124 Christmas trees; 4,473 yards of garland; 14,000 yards of ribbon; over 5.5 miles of Christmas lights; and one giant candy cane for a tropical deck party. Highlights during Very Merrytime Cruises include a tree-lighting ceremony with all of the Disney characters in their festive attire, a Winter Wonderland Ball, and a Deck the Deck Tropical Holiday Party. Holiday carolers and Dickens-inspired characters carry the spirit of the season throughout the ship while singing holiday classics, sometimes with the help of favorite Disney friends. And no holiday cruise would be complete without ample chances to meet Santa Claus and attend storytime with Mrs. Claus.

Dream of sailing to a galaxy far, far away? Star Wars Day at Sea is a day-long celebration aboard special sailings on the Disney Fantasy. The full-day Star Wars celebration includes a deck party, meet-and-greets with favorite intergalactic characters, Star Wars-themed youth activities, unique food and beverage offerings, and special merchandise. On this day, families are encouraged to dress up in their own stellar costumes. A shipboard version of the popular Jedi Training Academy experience (available at Disneyland and Walt Disney World) invites young Padawans to learn lightsaber moves from a Jedi Master and then use the Force and face off in a final test against Darth Vader. Families can also enjoy friendly competition during Star Wars trivia games and attend at-sea screenings of all the Star Wars films as well as the Disney XD animated series, Star Wars Rebels. Occurring one day on select 7-night Disney Fantasy sailings, Star Wars Day at Sea is featured on itineraries sailing in early 2018 from Port Canaveral, Florida, to the Eastern and Western Caribbean.

Or perhaps your family would love to hobnob with Captain America, Thor, and Spider-Man. Marvel Day at Sea is a day-long celebration of the super heroes from Marvel comic books and movies, available aboard select sailings on the Disney Magic. Families can take part in numerous Marvel-themed activities during this special event, which is included in the Disney Cruise fare. Highlights from Marvel Day at Sea include exclusive character interactions with Marvel’s mightiest super heroes and most menacing villains, a themed deck party, Marvel-themed youth activities, special merchandise and uniquely themed food and beverage offerings. Kids and families summon their super knowledge and enjoy friendly competition during Marvel trivia games and attend exclusive at-sea screenings of fan-favorite films from the Marvel universe including the newest theatrical releases, as well as viewings of the Disney XD shows: Marvel’s Avengers Assemble, Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel Day at Sea will debut in fall 2017 on select 7- and 8-night sailings from New York and be available early 2018 on select 5-night sailings from Miami.
