Opened in 2013 at a cost of $415 million, SLS Vegas is an oasis of low-key cool located mid-Strip. For couples who drive their own car to Vegas or rent one at the airport, it's a fine base of operations as you'll need to leave the property to get close to the major hotels and attractions of the city.
Of course, taxis, Uber and Lyft can all transport you to and from the hotel, and even those without wheels can go directly from SLS Vegas to the Strip thanks to the Las Vegas Monorail. Its northern terminus is adjacent to the hotel and accessible through a set of double doors. Note: Two spots not reachable via the Monorail are Downtown Las Vegas and McCarren Airport.
Guest Rooms at SLS Las Vegas Hotel & Casino
SLS Las Vegas’ 1,613 guest rooms are located in three towers and range from 325-square-foot units to 3,300-square-foot penthouse suites.
Designed by Philippe Starck in collaboration with Gensler, rooms are dressed like fantasy sets. A scrim behind the bed depicts an maiden accoutered like an 18th-century courtesan. The white-linen-sheathed kingsize bed, with some of the biggest feather pillows we'd ever cuddled up to, was downright sexy — and that was before we noticed the rectangular mirror affixed to the ceiling directly above.
Lamps, curtains, and the dramatic, room-long fainting couch are all white. A state-of-the-art, large screen Samsung TV and radio offered entertainment. We didn't dare touch the refrigerated part of the minibar, which appeared as well defended as Fort Knox.
The shower is big enough for two, and the amenities are plentiful and generously sized. Supplying dental and shaving sets along with human-hand-sized soap was much appreciated.
Instead of a closet, there's a jungle-gym-like apparatus with drawers underneath it, which made a lot of sense.
Dining at SLS Las Vegas Hotel & Casino
Like many Vegas hotels, several of the restaurants at SLS are affiliated with a celebrity chef. We were first introduced to José Andrés on a billboard as we drove from the airport. Dressed in fresh chef whites, he was brandishing the leg of a dead animal, which is apparently considered a delicacy by some and available at Bazaar Meat by José Andrés restaurant, touted as a "wild and wonderful celebration of the carnivorous."
For the T-shirt and shorts crowd, there's Umami Burger, Beer Garden & Sports Book. Named “Burger of the Year” by GQ magazine, Umami Burger serves All-American food surrounded by more than 50 widescreen TVs. There's also a sports book and beer garden overlooking the Strip that pours a variety of craft beers.
Other eateries include sushi at Katsuya by Starck, Cleo's contemporary Mediterranean cuisine, Ku Noodle Chinese fare, a pizzeria and the Northside Cafe. In addition to booths and tables, the Northside has a U-shaped bar where those traveling solo will feel comfortable dining or picking up a take out meal from the menu. A word to the wise: Steer clear of the ravioli with marinara sauce or you will regret it in the middle of the night.
There are plenty of places to quash a thirst. We liked the pictures of the well-attired simians that decorate the walls of the Monkey Bar.
Activities at SLS Las Vegas Hotel & Casino
The pools at SLS Vegas aim to be more than a place to take a dip. Dubbed Lux and Foxtail, these posh and party-ready swimming holes operate as day clubs during the weekends and serve as an amenity to hotel guests during the week. If that's your scene, expect daybeds, cabanas and snacks and cocktails delivered poolside.
Are you spa fans? Treatments in Ciel Spa at SLS are organized by "intention." You can choose modalities such as "Soothe Life's Stresses," a full-body massage that incorporates aromatherapy; "Soft Like Silk," which wraps one in a deep moisturizing butter; and "Soul Lifting Sanctuary," which can serve as an antidote to hangovers and other indulgences.
A 125-minute dual treatment, "Sweet Loving Souls" immerses a couple in a bath of exfoliating fruit extracts and detoxifying bath salts. That's followed by a shea butter body wrap and then a hot-oil scalp massage and 50-minute Ciel massage.
Or cut to the chase for a side-by-side couples massage, where you can get rubbed the right way for 50 or 80 minutes. If you prefer privacy, a masseur or masseuse (you choose the gender), can minister to you in your room or suite.
Spending Money at SLS Vegas
It's a challenge to stay in a casino hotel without wanting to gamble, and SLS Vegas presents several temptations.
We don't normally like to mix cards and cuisine, but there's food and beverages by José Andrés inside Bazaar Casino. Gamblers can try their hand at blackjack and roulette tables, grab a cocktail at the bar, or lounge and chow down on signature dishes at dining tables.
The nearly 60,000-square-foot main casino contains 800 slot and video poker machines, some 70 table games, and a poolside race and sports book that allows customers to use a mobile betting platform compatible with iPhone, iPad and Android devices.
Weddings and Romance at SLS Las Vegas
The Vegas hotel with the sexiest hotel rooms is well prepared to host bachelor and bachelorette parties, bridal showers and wedding rehearsals, and wedding ceremonies and receptions (see online brochure).
Venues range from intimate, 20-person spaces up to ones that hold hundreds of guests. Parties can also be held around the Lux pool (capacity 300), which is edged by a DJ booth and stage. The Foxtail pool and nightclub can accommodate up to 2,000 revelers.
Several of the restaurants also offer private-dining spaces and couples can have a specialty cocktail devised by one of the resident mixologists.
And these passed hors d'oeuvres may make your mouth water for the rest of a catered meal at the hotel:
- SLS Beef Wellingtons
- Melon in Prosciuitto
- Tandoori Chicken with Mint Yogurt
- White Truffle Risotto Fritters
A variety of wedding packages offer amenities that include:
- Lux suite for the wedding night
- Couples massage
- Private car service to and from the Clark County Courthouse to get your wedding license
and other sweeteners.
What You Should Know About SLS Las Vegas Hotel & Casino
The hotel is located on an undistinguished stretch of real estate between the glitzy southern Las Vegas Strip (Caesars, Bellagio) and hipster-loving, still-trashy Downtown Las Vegas. And there have been financial struggles.
Yet with enough time and luck (and wasn't this town built on luck?), SLS Vegas will take its rightful place among popular Vegas hotels.
