Silversea Silver Spirit - La Terraza Italian Restaurant

La Terraza Italian Restaurant on the Silversea Silver Spirit
Linda Garrison

One of the best things about larger cruise ships is the opportunity to enjoy several different dining venues and cuisines. With 540 guests, the Silver Spirit is certainly not large, but this Silversea ship has a terrific variety of diverse dining venues. Some are the same as those past Silversea cruisers have grown to love on the cruise line's other ships--The Restaurant, La Terraza, the Pool Grill, and Le Champagne. And, the excellent room service selection is also still available.

In addition, the Silver Spirit has three excellent dinner options. The first is Seishin, the Asian restaurant, which carries an extra surcharge, depending on the menu and the drinks. The second is The Grill, a casual restaurant outdoors above the pool that features a variety of grilled foods, all cooked on hot lava rocks. The third new option is Stars, a supper club with small bites of interesting flavors and textures, followed by live entertainment.

In the evening, La Terraza is transformed from a casual buffet to an elegant dining room.

La Terrazza is a popular casual dining venue on all the Silversea ships. It has been expanded on the Silver Spirit, adding some much-needed outdoor seating. The restaurant serves buffet breakfast and lunch, and becomes an Italian Trattoria in the evening. As diners go over the menu, the waiters at La Terrazza freely pour the Proseco (Italian sparkling wine), the beginning of a memorable meal.

Here's a sample evening menu from La Terraza:

Antipasti
Cold tomato soup with shrimp and bread croutons
Poached egg with asparagus and Parmesan fondue
Caprese salad with fresh tomaotes, basil, and buffalo mozarella
Fresh tuna salad with potatoes, black olives, and parsley dressing
Beef carpaccio served with arugula, celery, and Parmesan cheese
Assorted Italian salami and cold cut, served with Tuscan bread and mostarda
A taste of all the La Terraza antipasti (the best selection, served on a plate with a separate section for each appetizer)

Pasta
Vegetable minestrone
Home-made ravioli with Parma ham and cherry tomato
Ligurian ravioli with vegetable and herb filling, walnut sauce
Small penne pasta with tomato, eggplant, red onion, and fresh oregano
Linguine pasta with seafood and fresh tomatoes
Parpadelle pasta with duck ragout
Spaghetti pasta with creamy sauce and bacon

Secondi (Main Course)
Veal escalope with orange and lemon juice, served with fried zuchini
Thinly sliced filet of beef with mushed potatoes and red wine sauce
Fresh catch of the day served with herb lemon dressing and vegetables
Grilled fillet of salmon with asparagus and balsamic reduction

Dolci (Desserts)
Tiramisu
Choice of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, or pistachio ice cream
Amaretto flan topped with caramelized banana and cinnamon cented mascarpone cream
Pistachio creme brulee with strawberry ice cream and twisted brandy snap
Italian marsala custard with vanilla ice cream and biscotti
Selection of Italian cheeses with "mostarda di cremona"

The outdoor dining area at La Terraza has been expanded on the Silver Spirit. I love dining outside, and guests can enjoy all three meals outdoors.

Guests don a bib before their sizzling dinners arrive at the Hot Rock Grill. Since I usually dribble something, I wish this was a more prevalent practice!

The main course at The Grill arrives at the table on a sizzling stone. See below the photo for more on The Grill.

The Grill on the Silver Spirit is a passenger favorite. The concept is outstanding, and the food is certainly "cooked to order" since each person cooks their own main course. Reservations are required, but there is no surcharge. Guests love dining outside, the atmosphere is fun, and the food is simple and delicious. When the ship is sailing in colder climates, the diners wrap up in blankets, and the hot stones provide extra warmth. Each main course arrives on its own sizzling hot stone that stays very hot for about 45 minutes. I like my steak medium rare, so I took it off the hot rock, placed it on my plate, cut off each bite, cooked it for a few seconds, and ate it red hot. Others who like their meat more done let it stay on the rock and continue to cook while they ate. Either way works.

The Grill menu includes:

Salads
New York Salad - crispy greens with bacon bits, crumbled blue cheese, and blue cheese dressing
Caesar Salad - romaine lettuce with garlic croutons, anchovies, parmesan shavings, and home-made Caesar dressing
Green Salad - choice of balsamic, Italian, or French dressing

Main Courses
6 oz. centre-cut filet mignon
8 oz. New York strip steak
10 oz. Colorado prime rib eye steak
10 oz. marinated flank steak (served rare)
10 oz. Pennsylvania mild-fed veal chop
14 oz. Berkshire pork chop
6 oz. Australian lamb
6 oz. Atlantic salmon steak
grilled fresh fish of the day (depending on market availability)
grilled Madagascar prawns

Desserts
apple pie with vanilla sauce
marinated fruit salad
dark and white chocolate mousse

All meals are accompanied by a selection of grilled Mediterranean vegetables, a baked potato, and a selection of sauces--peppercorn, mushroom, or Bearnaise.

I've tried several of the main courses and all were great comfort food and delicious.

Silversea Silver Spirit - Stars Supper Club

Stars is a small, intimate club that serves small bites of diverse food, followed by live entertainment. See below the photo for a sample menu.

Stars is fun for both dining and entertainment on the Silver Spirit. The supper club opens each evening at about 8:15, and diners (with reservations) sample a selection of a variety of foods, followed by a bowl of pasta if they are still hungry. Reservations are required for dinner, but there is no surcharge.

The small bites at Stars are actually two or three morsels of a diverse selection of dishes. The menu on our cruise included all of the following, served in separate small plates/bowls:

Lobster Avocado - Beetroot Gorgonzola - Duck Foie Gras
Flavored with sweetcorn, pinenut, red wine, onion, and pineapple

Mussels - Quail Breast - Duck
Flavored with fennel, pear, foie gras, and berries

Red Fish - Cod - Lobster
Flavored with anise, celeriac, herbs, pistou, and baby spinach

Lamb - Tournedos Rossini - Black Pork
Flavored with bacon, onion, perigourdine, celeriac, and parsnip

Baby Pear - Cherry Cinnamon Crumble - Chocolate Fondant - Creme de Menthe Ice Cream
Flavored with Valrohna chocolate and caramel

Those who require more sustenance can have a sampler of three pastas before the dessert.

The entertainment starts at 10:00 pm and included a jazzy singer and her accompanist on our cruise. Stars also has a small dance floor. Personally, I would have liked to enjoy the show with dinner, but don't like to have dinner starting at 10 pm. However, guests who like to dine late can stretch their dinner into the show, but most seemed to dine first and then stay for the show like we did. Passengers do not have to dine at Stars to enjoy the show. The Stars entertainment was quite popular on the Silver Spirit, and many guests would drop in for the show after dining elsewhere.

Silversea Silver Spirit - Seishin Restaurant

Silversea Silver Spirit - Seishin Restaurant

Seishin is the premium Asian restaurant on the Silver Spirit. It has an extra surcharge, but is a special place to dine and worth the fee.

Seishin has four different pricing structures for Silver Spirit guests. The first is a choice of either "Teaser 1" or "Teaser 2" menus, which are four courses and include complimentary wines. The second is the standard 8-course menu with complimentary wines. The third choice is the standard 8-course menu and sake, and the fourth choice is the standard 8-course menu and premium wines.

The Asian menu is excellent, and watching the sushi chef at work adds to the dining experience. The chef will mix and match the sushi/sashimi plate to your tastes and preferences. The "teaser" menu was plenty to eat for dinner, and the Wagyu beef was so tender it melted in your mouth. I tried the "teaser 2" menu and loved everything except for the caviar sorbet amuse. Although I love ice cream and sorbets, I've never liked caviar, and the caviar sorbet tasted more like caviar than it did like a sorbet. It was an interesting taste, but two small spoonfuls was enough.

Here's some sample menus from Seishin:

  • Seishin Teaser 1
  • Amuse - Signature caviar Sorbet
  • Silversea Sashimi Platter with traditional condiments
  • Waterpaper roll of spider crab with green pea jus and lemongrass-infused extra virgin olive oil
  • Tiger prawn tempura with Japanese chili sauce
  • Green tea sorbet
  • Seishin Teaser 2
  • Amuse - Signature caviar Sorbet
  • Silversea Sashimi Platter with traditional condiments
  • Game hen with teriyaki sauce
  • Signature Tepan grilled Wagyu beef with wasabi and natural flavors - the portion size of this was generous, and it tasted so good I forgot to make a photo!
  • Green tea sorbet
  • Seishin Degustation
  • Amuse - Signature caviar Sorbet
  • Assorted sushi with traditional condiments
  • Octopus sashimi with prune jam
  • Marinated clams on pink Jurassic seasalt
  • Caviar with a moist green asparagus flan
  • Crispy grilled snapper with pistachio butter
  • Royal crab with mango tartar
  • Signature Tepan grilled Wagyu beef with wasabi and natural flavors
  • Seishin's Signature Red Bean Sorbet

Le Champagne offers a Relais & Chateaux dining experience on the Silver Spirit. See below the photo for more information on Le Champagne.

Silversea has collaborated with Relais & Chateaux Master Chef Jacques Thorel to develop menus for Le Champagne. The gourmet dining experience at Le Champagne has a per person cover charge, and the house wines are included.

The menus at Le Champagne change nightly and are both regional and seasonal, many reflecting regions of the world that are renowned for their wine. Some of the dinners featured on our cruise included such interesting themes as "Foie Gras and Champagne", "Under the Spanish Sun", "Lobster Lavishly", "North American Delights", and "Bordeaux Rendezvous".

The pool grill serves a wellness breakfast and grill lunch, which is served until 4 pm. The Mexican turkey burger and fries are especially good.
