The Silver Spring Thanksgiving Parade, officially named the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade, kicks off the holiday season with a family friendly celebration in Downtown Silver Spring. The lineup includes giant balloons, a variety of floats and Santa's sleigh accompanied by reindeers and elves throwing candy canes to the crowd. The Washington Redskins Marching Band will participate in the parade, along with multiple high school marching bands, clowns, mounted police, costumed characters, fire engines, trained dogs, classic cars, and a variety of South American dancing groups.
ABC 7 Meteorologist Brian van de Graaff will serve as master of ceremonies. The parade will be held rain or shine and will be broadcast live on News Channel 8. The telecast will be repeated on Thanksgiving Day.

Transportation and Parking
Parade organizers urge spectators to take Metro to the Silver Spring station.
The northbound lanes of Georgia Avenue, from East-West Highway to Colesville Road will close at 7 a.m. and re-open after the conclusion of the parade at about 1 p.m.
Free parking will be available in the public garages including the Wayne Avenue Garage, the Sligo Avenue Garage, and the Bonifant Street Garage next to the Metro. The Spring Street and Ellsworth Town Center garages are CLOSED that day. The public parking garage at Ellsworth Drive will close at 2 a.m. Saturday morning to accommodate the parade.
The Gateway Plaza lot at Colesville and Georgia Avenues will close at 7 a.m.
The parade is always looking for volunteers to be gingerbread men, elves, and pilgrims on floats or to lead balloons. The Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade is looking for volunteers, aged 10 and older, to hand out candy to the crowd, dress up in costume and ride on the floats, to act as unit leaders, and to be balloon handlers. The hours for volunteers are from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (volunteers need to be present the whole time) Volunteers meet at the Silver Spring Civic Building at One Veterans Place at Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street.
