Where to Shop in Calais

Where to find the best shops in Calais

Channel Outlet Store in Calais. Channel Outlet Store

Shopping is one of the main reasons many Brits make the trip over the Channel. It’s long been known for ‘booze runs’ and near Christmas is particularly busy. But there's much more to shopping in Calais in Nord-Pas de Calais than visiting Carrefour or Calais Vins, good though these shops are. Here is a selection of places to shop whether you are on a day trip from the UK, staying in Calais overnight, or coming back to the UK after your holiday.

There are 2 major shopping complexes.

  • Auchan to the west of Calais, is open Monday to Saturday 8.30am to 9.30pm.
    Avenue Roger Salengro. Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 46 92 92.
Auchan website for location and information.
  • Cite Europe, a huge shopping mall of many different shops, including a large Carrerour, is another destination. Carrefour is open Monday to Wednesday 8.30am-9pm, Tuesday, Saturday to 8pm, Friday to 9pm. Cite Europe is open Monday to Saturday 10am-8pm, Friday and Saturday to 9pm).
    1001 boulevard du Kent, Tél : 03 21 46 47 48.

Bargain Clothes and Homeware Shopping

  • Channel Outlet Store in Coquelles has 80 good names from Adidas, Desigual, Delsey and Calvin Kelin to Hugo Boss, Lee Cooper, Tommy Hilfiger, Nike and Yves Delorme. Open Monday to Saturday 10am-7pm with some Sunday openings.
Boulevard du Parc, 62911 Coquelles, France.

Shopping for Wine

  • For wines, I recommend Calais Vins. At junction 44 off the A16, this is not only a great wine shop where you can taste many of the wines, but it also has beers, a good range of sparkling wines and prices from the extremely modest to the skies. Staff speak English and you can spend as long as you like tasting and choosing. They source many of the wines individually, so you’ll get small owner-run vineyards here. A Philippe Olivier cheese shop is to one side, stocking a huge range of the best French cheeses and there’s a good bread shop and snack bar. And it’s open on a Sunday which is a great advantage. Open Monday to Saturday 9am-7pm; Sunday 9.30am-6pm.
    Zone Curie, Rue Gutenbert, Tel: 00 33 (0)321 46 40 40.

Individual shops

  • La Maison du Fromage et des Vins has a good selection of cheeses and wine, and also other deli products. It's owned by Le Channel restaurant in Calais. Open Monday 2-7pm, Tuesday to Saturday 8.30am-12.30pm & 3-7.30pm; Sunday 10am-3pm. Annual closure last week of July and first week of August and first 3 weeks in January.
    1 rue Andre Gerschell (on the corner of the Place d’Armes), Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 34 44 72.
  • Bar a Vins is a great wine shop run by the enthusiastic Luc Gilles who really knows his wines. It's in central Calais. Open Monday to Saturday 9.00 am to 7pm, Sunday 9.30pm to 3.00pm. Closed Wednesday.
    52 Place d’Armes, Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 96 96 31.
  • Le Terroir You’ll get a wide range of wines here, plus all kinds of gastronomic items in this family-run shop where Michel Morvan has been selling products for 29 years. Good advice, friendly welcome. Tuesday to Saturday 9am-12.30pm & 2-7.30pm; Sunday 9.30a,-1pm
    29 rue des Fontinettes, Tel. 00 33 (0)3 21 36 34 66.

  • Les Delices de la Mer With the owners buying directly from local fishermen, you can’t go wrong here.
    160 Boulevard La Fayette, Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 34 64 57.
  • Huitriere Calaisienne This is the place for Brittany crabs, lobsters and oysters.
    Blvd La Fayette, Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 36 50 97.
  • Emile Fournier et Fils Established over a century ago and still family run, come here for smoked fish, from salmon to trout. There’s a small fish market on the quayside opposite the marina at weekends.
    53 rue Mouron, Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 96 49 36.

Specialist Food Shops

  • A la Ferme This is a genuine farm shop run by the local cooperative. All the meats, cheeses, fruit and veg and other products come as fresh as possible.
    46 Blvd Gambetta, Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 96 92 42

Being once a great center for lace making, you should try to buy some when you’re here. The shop at the International Lace Center has some pretty examples. Otherwise try this specialist shop which sells lovely artisan-made lace. Here you’ll find table cloths, place mats, napkins and more in a rainbow of colours. Artisan-made lace is inevitably much more expensive than the machine made variety, but once you've found these beautiful products, it will be difficult to economise.

  • Noyon Boutique Dentelle
    85 rue de Vic, Tel.: 00 33 (003 21 46 78 04.

Sports shops

  • Decathlon Major French chain covering every sport has a huge selection and good prices. Monday to Saturday 9am-8pm.
    Zac des cailloux, Rue de Verdun, Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 00 05 00.
  • Terres et Eaux Warehouse style shop specialising in hunting, fishing and horse riding. Monday to Saturday 9am-7.30pm.
    Parc d’activite chemin vert, 196 rue des oliviers, Tel.: 00 33 (0)3 21 17 17 70.

Street markets are found in place d’Armes on Wednesdays and Saturdays and at place Crevecoeur on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

If you're in Calais for a visit, make sure you take in the Museum of Lace, one of the top attractions in the area.
