Campground Review and Description submitted by About Camping Reader
Description: After reading the previous reviews, I was a bit skeptical and while some of the comments were true (very crowded, the golf carts, pay showers [.50 for 6 min.], etc.) we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful.
Overall, we had one of the most memorable reunions here and all of the kids are begging us to have it here again next year. If you are looking for a small, quiet place, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a place that has a lot of unique things to offer and plenty of options to keep kids of all ages entertained, this is it. A lot of people complain about all of the separate charges, but I get it - this way, you only pay for the amenities you are going to use. But I feel the cabin fees should be a flat fee for the amount of people they are meant to sleep (8).
Pros, Cons, Attractions and Additional Comments
Pros: The Pond with all of the inflatable toys to climb, slide, jump and float on, along with all of the other amenities available for the kids (jumping pillow, pedal cars, tubing, ice cream, etc.). Spacious camping sites, which worked well for our family reunion activities.
Cons: Overcrowded - very hard to drive down the roads with people, kids, bikes and pets clogging the pathways; the pool, playground and pond were always packed; and the cabins are very old and not the cleanest, with very uncomfortable mattresses on the beds. They were very musty-smelling. In fact, one of them smelled like it had a dead rodent in it, and we actually discovered a live one (a baby mouse) in ours.
Both issues were reported to management, who responded very quickly to both complaints. But it still made us feel very uneasy and we actually ended up catching our little varmint ourselves the next day - thanks to my brother, but our mother almost had a heart attack!.
Attractions: St. Louis River, Clough Island, Spirit Mountain, Lake Superior Zoo, Spirit Lake Marina, Duluth Ship Canal, cruises on Lake Superior, hiking, biking, rafting on the river -- just tons of fun stuff. They even have WiFi.
Comments: Bring foam pads for the beds; wear shoes when tubing, as the water is very shallow and you end up having to get up & walk across the very sharp rocks in certain areas. Side tables and luggage racks would be very helpful in the bathroom and bedroom areas of the cabin .
