If you're planning a trip to New York City, the first thing to figure out is when to visit New York City. A year-round destination, every season brings its own advantages to New York City visitors.
Winter in New York City
In my mind, winter in New York City starts just after the New Year and lasts until late March/early April. During this time of year crowds are smaller, and the weather can be cold, but there are still lots of great reasons to visit New York City. You can enjoy Winter Restaurant Week, a Valentine's getaway, the Lunar New Year and no where else celebrates St. Patrick's Day as well as New York City does. The key to enjoying winter in New York City is dressing properly: lots of layers, waterproof shoes, and a nice long coat will go a long way toward making sure you're comfortable as you explore the city in the cold.
Spring in New York City
As the weather warms, New York City becomes a more vibrant, fun place to visit. New Yorkers tend to be so excited as spring arrives that you'll see them spending time in New York City's great parks, including Central Park. The weather makes it a wonderful time to visit New York City -- it's the perfect time of year to explore NYC on foot, whether on your own or on a walking tour. Bring comfortable shoes for walking, and an umbrella (and rain boots!) in case it rains, and you're in for a treat during springtime in NYC.
Summer in New York City
With school out and warm weather, it's no surprise that summer is a popular time to visit New York City. There are many free concerts and events throughout the season, making it a budget-friendly time to visit, despite its popularity. Shakespeare in the Park, Museum Mile Festival and Outdoor Film Festivals are just a few of the great summer events visitors can enjoy in New York City. Of course, New York City's wonderful ice cream and even nearby beaches are great rewards for summertime visitors.
Fall in New York City
Autumn in New York -- it's no wonder that the season's beauty and charm has been captured in the classic tune. It's my favorite time of year in New York City -- warm days and cool evenings make it perfect for enjoying everything New York City has to offer, from walking tours and public parks to museums and fantastic restaurants. Of course, during fall visits to New York City you can enjoy the region's fall foliage or maybe you'd like to experience Halloween in the big city.
Holiday Season in New York City
While most places have four seasons, New York City really has five -- the holiday season in New York City really has it's own draws and charms. The holiday season in New York City spans from Thanksgiving through New Year's and draws many visitors who want to experience the city's amazing holiday decorations and events, as well as many folks who want to do their holiday shopping in New York City's great stores. Visiting during this popular time will mean paying a premium for airfare and hotels, but you'll be creating memories for years to come.
