The Scenic Crystal European river ship of Scenic Tours has six different sizes of cabins and suites, spread over three decks and in 14 different categories. Scenic Tours is an Australian land tour and river cruise company that markets its river cruises in the USA under the name of Scenic Cruises. Starting in 2013, its European river cruises will be all-inclusive.

The Scenic Crystal cabins come equipped with luxury bath products, bath robes, and a hair dryer. In addition the cabins have queen-sized beds that can be split into twins, plush Egyptian cotton linens, individual climate control, mini-bar, personal safe, and cabin service twice daily. All the cabins have WiFi service and a flat-screen television with a selection of channels and a high-tech Apple infotainment system. This system includes a keyboard and mouse, so the flat-screen can be easily used to access the Internet. The infotainment system also includes a forward-looking cruise camera and radio.

Over 80 percent of the cabins (all but the Standard Staterooms) have a private outdoor balcony that can be transformed into a sunroom with the push of a button.

The categories are assigned based on the deck and location (aft or middle) of the ship. The next five items provide a detailed description of each of the main cabin sizes and types.

  • Royal Suite
  • Royal Panorama Junior Suite
  • Junior Balcony Suite
  • Deluxe Balcony Suite and Balcony Suite

The four Royal Suites (categories R and RA) are the largest and most elegant suites on the Scenic Crystal. With 315 square feet of space, each suite has a nice sitting area with television, chairs, sofa, and coffee table. The Royal Suites have enhanced butler service that includes early morning tea and coffee service, daily service of fruit skewers in the afternoon, canapes before dinner and petit fours after dinner, shoeshine service, in-suite dining, complimentary bottled water in the suite, and valet service. Upon request, the butler will unpack and repack the luggage or draw a bath for you. The Royal Suites also include a complimentary bottle of champagne, laundry service and pressing. Guests in these suites even get a private transfer to and from the ship at the start and end of the cruise.

The large bathroom in the Royal Suite has twin basins and a separate tub and shower.

Royal Panorama Suites

The Scenic Crystal has two Royal Panorama Suites (Category S) located aft on the Danube Deck. These two suites measure 250 square feet, just like the Junior Suites. However, these suites offer panoramic views of both the side and rear of the ship and have an enlarged, wrap-around teak balcony. The two Royal Panorama Suites can be clearly seen in this photo of the Scenic Crystal.

Like the Royal Suites, the Royal Panorama Suites offer early morning tea and coffee service; daily service of fruit skewers, canapes, and petit fours; complimentary bottled water in the suite; and valet service. The butler will arrange for the complimentary pressing of two clothing items per person per day and a shoe shine.

The Royal Panorama Suites have a separate sitting area and both a tub and shower in the bathroom.

The four Junior Balcony Suites (Category RJ and BJ) are in a great midship location on the Scenic Crystal. Two of the suites are on the Danube Deck and two are on the Rhine Deck. Measuring 250 square feet like the Panorama Royal Suites, these cabins offer all of the same amenities, including a separate tub and shower in the bathroom. The Junior Suites have a small sitting area and a slightly larger balcony than the Deluxe Balcony Suites.

Deluxe Balcony Suites and Balcony Suites

Deluxe Balcony Suite #207
Scenic Crystal (c) Linda Garrison

The 20 Deluxe Balcony Suites measure 225 square feet. Ten of the suites (Category BD) are on the Rhine Deck, and ten are on the Danube Deck (Category PD). I stayed in Deluxe Balcony Suite #207 and loved the comfortable bed, large bathroom, and innovative balcony/sun room. One feature I especially enjoyed was the terrific shower in the bathroom. It had three shower heads, great water pressure, and something I'd never seen before--a lighted shower head that either changed colors every few seconds or could be set for one particular color, depending on your mood. It certainly made me smile every time I got into the shower! These deluxe showers are found in all cabin categories with balconies on the Scenic Crystal.

The 42 Balcony Suites are in Categories BA, C, PA, A, and BS. These suites are also spread across the Rhine and Danube decks. One of the cabins (Category BS) on the Rhine Deck is a single cabin and measures 129 square feet. The other 41 Balcony Cabins measure 205 square feet and look very similar to the Deluxe Balcony Cabins, but are further aft on the ship.

The Deluxe Balcony and Balcony Suites on the Danube Deck have some of the extra amenities found in the Junior Suites such as complimentary butler service, early morning tea and coffee service, in-room breakfast, two items pressed daily, and a shoe shine.

Standard Staterooms

Standard Stateroom #110 on the Moselle Deck
Scenic Crystal (c) Linda Garrison

The Scenic Crystal has 13 Standard Staterooms on Moselle Deck 1. These 160-square foot cabins are the only ones on the ship without a balcony/sun room, but they do have a window.

The Standard Staterooms have many of the same amenities found in the other cabins, but the shower stall is smaller than the extra-large ones found in other cabin categories. It's similar in size to those found in the lower cabin categories on other river or ocean-going ship.
