October's Big Holiday

Halloween Spooktacular: At Sea World San Diego, you can wear a costume, go trick-or-treating, enjoy silly spooky shows, boogie on their interactive dance floor and get your photo taken with some wacky characters. The San Diego Zoo and other tourist spots may also have Halloween parties.

Things That Look Like Fun in October

These events come from my San Diego bucket list. They look like fun, but I haven't had a chance to experience them in person.

Fleet Week San DiegoHeld annually in September and October, this celebration of San Diego's military service men and women includes concerts, parades, and a big air show.

Humphreys by the Bay ConcertsA fun outdoor summer concert series held on Shelter Island from June through October.

Adams Avenue Street Fair: Get a local feel at Southern California's largest free two-day music festival, held the last weekend in September. You'll find six music stages, beer gardens and beer tastings, giant carnival rides, festival foods and lots of arts and crafts booths.

Especially Fun to Do in October

You won't find much to make you think it's autumn in San Diego, but up in the little town of Julian, it's apple harvest time.

San Diego's best surf season is August through November. June through October is the tuna sport-fishing season.

Special Events

The annual events listed above happen every year, but they're not all that's going on in San Diego in October. If you're looking for a fun concert, sporting event or theatrical performance try these resources:

Good weather winds down in October, but you'll still have warm days with little chance of rain.

The weather information we've given above is best used as a general idea of what things may be like. The only rain all summer could fall on your perfect picnic, or a winter day could be so warm you'll wish you packed your shorts.

Averages are helpful for planning ahead, but don't count on your trip being "average." Check the San Diego weather forecast before you leave home.

What to Pack, What to Wear in October

Pack a mid-weight jacket, especially for the evening near the water. Bring short-sleeved shirts and lightweight pants, with a sweater for layering. Bring the shorts, but they may stay in the suitcase.

If you’re going to the beach, you may want to wiggle those ten fine toes in the sand. But getting that sand off your feet and out of everything else you own can be hard. To make it easier, pack a little bit of baby powder or cornstarch to put into your day pack. Sprinkle it on your skin and the the sand will brush off much easier.

Tips for San Diego in October

Hotel occupancy remains somewhat high through October, but with good planning you can get a nice play to stay for a reasonable rate.

More San Diego by Month

If you're just starting to plan your trip and deciding when to go, you may want to know what San Diego is like in other months. You'll find that in these guides:

If you go to San Diego in January or in February, you may have beautiful, sunny weather - or not. One thing you can be sure of there won't be a lot of other tourists getting in your way.

By spring, the weather starts to clear up, and flowers start blooming. March is fine, but you can also check out San Diego in April or San Diego in May.

Summer in San Diego starts out with foggy, cloudy days near the beach if you go to San Diego in June or sometimes even in July. By August, the fog clears up, but it's also one of the busiest months, with lots of families on vacation and Arizona residents looking to escape the heat. Here's what to expect from San Diego in August.

Fall is one of the best times if you can plan to go to San Diego in September or in October.

Holidays can be fun if you want to go to San Diego in November or San Diego in December.
