San Diego in August
Labor Day: September's Big Holiday (but sometimes August too)
In some years, Labor Day weekend can begin in August. To get some ideas on what you can do over the long weekend, check out this guide to Labor Day Fun in California.
San Diego's Best August Events: Recommendations
This short list includes things to do in December in San Diego that I have experienced and recommended.
Del Mar Races: Thoroughbred horse racing since 1937, lots of fun and your admission price includes weekend concerts.
Things That Look Like Fun in August
These events come from my San Diego bucket list. They look like fun, but I haven't had a chance to experience them in person
San Diego Spirits Festival: All in the name, this festival is about craft cocktails, good food, and fun culture
Bike the Bay: A 25mile bike ride that is the only opportunity to ride over the Coronado Bay Bridge. The finish line has a celebration with food, beer garden, and entertainment
World BodySurfing Championship: Held in Oceanside... next to the pier, hundreds of the world's best bodysurfers come to compete for the title
CityFest: Held in early August, this yearly festival celebrates the community of Hillcrest and takes place in the heart of it with food, crafts and entertainment.
Humphreys by the Bay Concerts: A fun outdoor summer concert series held on Shelter Island from June through mid-October.
Old Globe Theatre: Mid-June through late September, they stage outdoor Shakespeare productions in a reproduction of his original Globe Theatre.
Especially Fun to Do in August
San Diego's warm summers make it a great place for outdoor activities in the evening. Get some ideas here.
August is a good month to check out some of San Diego's best beaches. San Diego's best surf season is August through November. June through October is the tuna sportfishing season.
On Saturdays in July and August, the San Diego Zoo offers special overnight campouts at the zoo. Most are geared toward families, but one weekend is an all-adult version.
March through August is time for a uniquely Southern California event. During the annual grunion run, thousands of tiny, silvery fish mate by the light of the full moon (or the new one). See the schedule. The best San Diego beaches to see the show are La Jolla Shores, Pacific Beach between Tourmaline Park and Lifeguard Tower 20, Mission Beach between Lifeguard Towers 19 and 10, Ocean Beach between Mission Bay Channel and the Ocean Beach Pier and on Coronado between the Hotel del Coronado and Dog Beach.
The annual events listed above happen every year, but they're not all that's going on in San Diego in March. If you're looking for a fun concert, sporting event or theatrical performance try these resources:

What to Pack, What to Wear in August
Pack a mid-weight jacket, especially for the evening near the water. Bring short-sleeved shirts and lightweight pants, with a sweater for layering and shorts for the warmest days.
More San Diego by Month
If you're just starting to plan your trip and deciding when to go, you may want to know what San Diego is like in other months. You find that in these guides:
Summer in San Diego starts out with foggy, cloudy days near the beach if you go to San Diego in June or sometimes even in July. By August, the fog clears up, but it's also one of the busiest months, with lots of families on vacation and Arizona residents looking to escape the heat.
Beaches... in San Diego are susceptible to so-called "red tides" when red-colored algae grow so fast that they "bloom," coloring the water in the process. It's unsightly for sure, and it's safer to avoid swimming while they're happening. Find out everything you need to know about red tides here.
