Great organizational features
Uncomfortable to carry
If you want a lightweight suitcase that’s compact but has serious packing power, look no further than the Samsonite Silhouette XV Hardside Spinner.
As one of the world’s largest and most popular travel luggage companies, Samsonite is known for its high-quality, durable suitcases. Does its Silhouette XV Hardside Spinner live up to the brand’s reputation? We wanted to find out, so my family and I took the 26-inch version on an overseas trip to Europe, testing it for functionality, organization, quality, durability, and ease of use. Here’s what we found out.
Design: Spacious interior with lots of compartments
The Samsonite Silhouette XV Hardside Spinner was designed to meet the needs of the modern-day traveler; it is functional and tough, and it’s built to make packing intuitive and efficient. We tested the 26-inch version of this suitcase, but it also comes in other sizes.
The Silhouette is a high-quality, durable, and feature-rich suitcase that won’t disappoint.
This suitcase isn’t overly large, but it really does pack a punch thanks to its clamshell casing. It has two compartments for you to divvy up your belongings as you wish. For example, you can dedicate one side to clothes, while the other can store shoes and accessories. The Silhouette also features three mesh pockets, which are great for flat accessories like belts and ties, and a spill-proof plastic compartment for toiletries. And if you need to pack more, the suitcase also expands.
Made of durable polycarbonate material, the Silhouette is meant to last for years and years. Plus, the polypropylene corner rails flex to absorb some of the shock when the suitcase is dropped or when it hits something. So far, this extra layer of protection has seemed to work; each time at baggage claim, we’ve gotten our suitcase back scratch-free.
I was able to roll it straight and smoothly without putting any stress on my hands and arms.
Portability: Wheels make for super smooth mobility
The Silhouette weighs 11 pounds, which is light for a hard-case suitcase. This alone makes the bag easy to maneuver no matter how much you pack into it—and you can pack a lot! But it doesn’t stop there. This suitcase incorporates Samsonite’s Tru-Trac wheel system with a v-shaped camber—and what a difference it made. Throughout my family’s trip, I was able to roll it straight and smoothly without putting any stress on my hands and arms. It was a true game changer.
I didn’t find the carry handles to be comfortable—my hand kept getting stuck.
What’s more, the telescopic pull handle, which you can adjust to various heights with just the push of a button, comes complete with a cushioned rubber seal for an ergonomic and comfortable grip. My hand never got tired while rolling the suitcase around. However, I will note that I didn’t find the carry handles to be comfortable—my hand kept getting stuck, as the handles wouldn’t pop out quite enough.
Features: Helpful TSA-approved lock
The Samsonite Silhouette XV Spinner features an integrated TSA-approved lock, which allows you to secure your belongings while giving airport and security personnel easy access to them if need be.
The suitcase’s zippers, which feel sturdy, snap in and out of the lock neatly as you activate it with your personal combination. This is a smart feature that frequent flyers are sure to appreciate.
Price: A splurge, but worth it for frequent travelers
This suitcase retails for $400, though you can often find it on sale for more than $100 less. the Silhouette XV spinner usually sells for $340. This is a big investment, but considering that Samsonite didn’t leave anything to chance with this hardshell suitcase, you are sure to get your money’s worth. If you are a frequent flyer in search of a travel sidekick, this suitcase may be it.
Samsonite Silhouette XV Hardside Spinner vs. Away The Large
The Samsonite Silhouette and the Away Large suitcases share a lot of qualities: They’re both hardshell with a clamshell design that optimizes packing, and they’re both heavy-duty yet lightweight, with TSA-approved combination locks. Also, they’re both a breeze to navigate on various surfaces without putting physical stress on your arms or back.
That said, the Silhouette XV is more compact without forfeiting any packing power. What’s more, the Samsonite bag features more interior pockets, which are all well-thought-out. On the other hand, The Large is cheaper without skimping on quality and style—it’s definitely the chicest and most timeless number. Overall, both suitcases are comparable, and you can’t go wrong with either one.
