Salt Lake City January Events

2015

You might think of January as a dead, dull month in Utah, but in reality there are a lot of exciting sports, arts, music, film and theater events this month, including the Sundance Film Festival, one of the best Utah entertainment events of the year.

The list keeps evolving, so check back for more events as the month progresses.

Note: While we do our best to make sure all details are accurate, please contact the venue or visit their website before attending an event to make sure times, dates and prices are correct.

    All times MT. All Utah men's basketball games will be broadcast on ESPN 700 AM radio. Many games will be on the Pac-12 Networks, which appear on channels 37, 410 and 757 on Comcast. Pac-12 Network appears on channel 410 on DISH. Pac-12 Networks are not currently available on DirecTV.

    The Utah Symphony presents three classical concerts this month:

    • "New Years in Vienna" The Symphony rings in the new year with a musical homage to a classical tradition in Vienna, Austria. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 2-3, 8 p.m.
    • "The Nutcracker" The Utah Symphony welcomes back guest conductor Mark Wigglesworth with performances of works by Shostakovich’s and Tchaikovsky. Friday and Saturday, Jan 9-10, 8 p.m.

    Downtown Salt Lake Winter Market

    For those of us who like to eat local, it's a little sad when Salt Lake area farmers markets and produce stands shut down at the end of October. For the past couple of years, the SLC Downtown Alliance has been filling the gap with the Downtown SLC Winter Market, which has found a permanent home in the Rio Grande Depot. The market is held every other Saturday during the winter months, November through April.

    Here's the January schedule for the Downtown Salt Lake City Winter Market:

More than 200 plastinates—real human specimens preserved through Dr. von Hagens’ invention, the process of Plastination—reveal the human body in all its stages and in all its conditions, from health to distress to disease.

    Every year the Sundance Film Festival brings its edgy brand of Hollywood glamor to Park City and showcases dozens of innovative independent films. Getting tickets to Sundance screenings isn't as easy as walking up to the window at your neighborhood Megaplex, but festival organizers have gone out of their way to make tickets available to Utah locals. Take the time to jump through the hoops, and attending the Sundance Film Festival can be a fun, star-studded diversion during a dreary Utah winter.

    The world's best freestyle ski athletes will compete in Park City at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships Jan. 7-10. Events include include aerial, moguls, and dual moguls. To kick off the 2015 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup on Wednesday, January 7, at 7 p.m., a free live concert and fireworks display will take place on lower Main Street in Park City.

    Movie lovers can find a huge variety of free film screenings in Salt Lake City, including major Hollywood productions, experimental films, classics, kids' movies, documentaries and more.
