Memorial Day weekend is the official kick-off of summer for many, and Sacramento celebrates with plenty of fairs, festivals, and special events. Some local traditions of this weekend span back more than 40 years and can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Sacramento County Fair

Smaller than the state fair and much more affordable too, the Sacramento County Fair happens every Memorial Day Weekend and plays host to almost 90,000 guests. Enjoy traditional county fair contests, displays featuring local agriculture and plenty of activities for the entire family. The fair runs Thursday through Monday of Memorial Day weekend. Over 30 carnival rides are available, as well as plenty of eclectic food booths to enjoy.

Wounded Veteran Run

This Memorial Day walk/run benefits a non-profit organization that transitions wounded veterans back into civilian life. Kids can participate in a fun run while adults choose between a 5K or 10K. A special 3K is also available. Register and pay online through the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, as prices increase for onsite entries. If you are unable to attend this event, you can also donate online.

Vettes for Vets

This all-Corvette car show is free to attend. The show happens in the parking lot behind the museum. All veterans also receive free admission to the museum itself on this day, while all others can visit at regular admission price. If you own a Corvette you’d like to include in the show, register online or at the gate for a nominal fee listed on the museum’s website. Food, music and a raffle will also take place at this event.

The museum also runs train rides on Saturday.

International Kids Festival

Russian American Media hosts their 9th consecutive year of celebrating children and the diversity of Sacramento. Enjoy a multicultural talent show, a professional illusionist, face painting, free bounce houses and plenty of food and other forms of entertainment. Best of all, admission is free and the whole festival is eco-friendly.
