If you’ve been on the road for years or if you’re just looking for a way to mix up your typical RV trip why not consider heading south of the border? Mexico may not be as loaded down with high-end RV parks as the US but there are definitely some places to stay and some unique sights to see. A great place to try out in Mexico is the eastern region that hugs the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Let’s look into this area of Mexico by giving you the top four RV parks to stay at as well as some things to do when you find yourself there.
For our purposes, the east region of Mexico includes that states of Hidalgo, Puebla, Tlaxcala, and Veracruz.
4 of the Best RV Parks in East Mexico
IMSS La Trinidad: Tlaxcala, Tlaxcala
If you want to be up close to the action for Tlaxcala, you’ll have to sacrifice hookups when staying at this government run campground known as IMSS La Trinidad. Despite the lack of hookups, this is a pretty nice campground, you do have restroom and shower facilities, an onsite restaurant, plenty of room and even two pools should the lack of air conditioning get you a bit warm.
The campsite is within an easy distance to the city of Tlaxcala which has a lot to offer. If you’re interested in checking out the local cultural landmarks you should try Murals of the Government Palace, Basilica de Nuestra Senora de Ocotlan or Centro Historico de Tlaxcala for starters. Outdoor lovers will be captivated by the firefly show put on at Santuario de las Luciernagas and there are active archaeological sites around the area if you want to brush up on the history of the area.
Las Americas RV and Trailer Park: Cholula, Puebla
Las Americas RV and Trailer Park will take care of your needs while visiting the state of Puebla. There are several sites that come with full utility hookups so your RV can be a refuge from outside if you aren’t out exploring the area. You also get restrooms, showers, a kiddie pool, swimming pool and a recreation facility.
The park is fenced in and staffed by security but you may get some noise from the next door neighbor.
Cholula is a fantastic place if you dig the ruins of ancient Mexican civilizations. There are several nearby archaeological sites with some of the best found in the municipality of San Pedro Cholula, the most popular being the Great Pyramid of Cholula. Like other older Mexican cities, there are also several ornate historical buildings such as the Church of Our Lady of Remedies, the Templo San Francisco Acatepec, and the Ex-Convento de San Gabriel. To mix it up a bit you can visit the local botanic gardens or jazz club. Lots of interesting points of interest in Cholula.
Playa Paraisio Camping: Nautla, Veracruz
A nice place to take some time off while exploring Mexico can be found at Playa Paraisio Camping. This is a resort style RV park with several types of sites available including full hook up spots. This is a great family-oriented site with plenty of facilities like hot showers, bathrooms, laundry room and other resort-like amenities such as a convenience store, group-use areas, playground, resort-style swimming pools and onsite restaurant.
Playa is Spanish for the beach and as the name of the park implies, you are right on the beautiful beach at this park.
Nautla is not brimming with things to do but that’s kind of the point. When you are in Nautla your main concern should be running out of cold drinks on the beach rather than running down a to-do list of things to see. If beach-bumming is your main goal in your east Mexico tour, then Nautla and Playa Paraisio Camping are just right for you.
Villas Tepetapan and RV Park: Catemaco, Veracruz
Villas Tepetapan is a great RV park located within walking distance to many of the sites and points of interest in Catemaco. There are around 20 RV sites and many of those come with full utility hookups so you’ll be able to keep cool and hydrated in your RV. You get recently renovated bathrooms and hot showers, laundry facilities and even Wi-Fi access throughout the park. You get amenities above the basics as well with a swimming pool and group facilities available for your use.
Relaxation in Catemaco revolves around the lovely Catemaco Lake and the surrounding area. The best points of interest are found at Nanciyaga Laguna, Barra de Sontecomapan and Reserva Ecologica la Otra Opcion. Lagoons, local flora and fauna and other nature you can’t find in the United States will greet you in the area around Catemaco and Catemaco Lake. If crawling through the local environment doesn’t agree with you, you can spend plenty of time walking around town eating local fare and enjoying the architecture and history of the city.
If coastal cruising is your thing than east Mexico might be the spot for you. Try out some of the more established parks in Veracruz or check out some spots that aren’t overrun by tourists in other nearby states. Whatever you try, you should have a good time while RVing in east Mexico.
