America's playground for grown-ups, Las Vegas is practically in Los Angeles' backyard. The physical distance between the two cities is 275 miles, mostly desert, which can be crossed in under five hours on a drive that sets the mood for a romantic weekend.

Alternately, couples can fly to their getaway on a variety of carriers. Southwest Airlines is the most popular and usually least expensive. Be on the lookout for frequent sales for roundtrip tickets.

Up for a his-and-hers, golf-and-spa getaway weekend with some romantic dinners together? Phoenix, 375 miles and a six-hour drive from Los Angeles, can fit the bill. Save time by hopping a plane at LAX, and you can be there in about an hour.

The Phoenix/Scottsdale area is known for its high-end hotels, several of which specialize in romance. The Royal Palms actually has its own romance director.

For couples who want a really active weekend away, the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa is the largest luxury resort in the area. Its Revive Spa is like a playground for adults, offering first-rate treatments, a delicious spa menu, a top-notch gym and classes, a huge pool, sundecks, lounges, eucalyptus steam room, sauna, whirlpool, lounges, a fireplace, a boutique. For him, there's Wildfire Golf Club with Arnold Palmer and Nick Faldo courses.

Of course, your romantic Phoenix weekend needn't lock you into a hotel. From these Phoenix activity pictures, you'll see the area offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, hot air ballooning, touring by Jeep, horseback riding, shopping, or just soaking up that desert sun.

A Weekend Getaway South of Los Angeles: Los Cabos, Mexico

Pack your bags and head to LAX for a quickie flight to Los Cabos, Mexico, about two-and-a-half hours by air from Los Angeles.

There at the tip of Baja California, you'll find great beaches and golf courses, almost-guaranteed daily sunshine, and romantic resorts that go out of their way to top one another — and pamper couples from Los Angeles and elsewhere on a weekend getaway.

Depending on whether you venture to San José del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas, you'll encounter a vision of old-time Mexico, or a trendy destination jumping with high-rise hotels and night spots.

Breathtaking luxury abounds in these parts: Palmilla, located between the two resort towns, offers unique delights such as a "floating bed" on the beach, a loveseat on the lawn, and an outdoor spa daybed. Is it any wonder that celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow check in when they want an ultra-romantic getaway?

Marquis Los Cabos is another don’t-leave-the-property kind of place, with lovely rooms, alluring pools and patios, fine dining, and an excellent spa.

And Las Ventanas al Paraiso, the first ultra-luxury hotel built in the Los Cabos area, still sets the standard with spacious all-suite rooms and star-style service a couple like you deserves.
