Roar and Snore in San Diego

Experience Safari Camping in Southern California

 San Diego Safari Park

At the San Diego Safari Park, you can experience safari camping — without traveling to Africa — with a sleepover adventure, where you'll relax in comfy tents surrounded by the sounds of wildlife. The campground overlooks the Park's African Plains field exhibit, where you can observe giraffes, rhinos, antelope, gazelles, and many other denizens of Africa going about their daily business, just as they would in the wild.

Nestled in a scenic grove, the campground overlooks "East Africa," an expansive 65-acre enclosure where hundreds of exotic animals roam. Rhinoceroses meander by the campsite, close enough that guests can hear the crackling of leaves underfoot. Giraffes, gazelles, and wildebeest can be spotted at a waterhole nearby. Exotic animal ambassadors visit the campsite and guests come face to face with animals such as alligators and African crested porcupines.

Accommodations

The Park's canvas safari tents comfortably accommodate up to four people, offering sleeping pads and camp chairs. At an additional cost, the Classic tents can be upgraded to Vista, which offers spectacular views of East Africa. Comfy canvas Premium tents, accentuated with African decor, offer guests a queen-size platform bed with sleeping bags and pillows. Premium tents are placed next to the African elephant exhibit and come complete with electricity, camp chairs, a storage trunk, nightstand, and a welcome gift.

Premium tents can accommodate a couple or families of four by adding six-foot-long cots with sleeping bags.

Activities

Camp activities and an after-hours look at the wild lives of our animals, guided walks, a campfire program, delicious dinner and hot breakfast, a Safari Park souvenir, and the unique opportunity to experience the Park at night are included in most sleepovers. Some sleepovers feature a special dining experience, rather than dinner at camp, for an additional fee per person.

Roar & Snore

Roar & Snore is offered on throughout most of the year on Thursdays through Sundays and select Wednesdays. Guests are encouraged to bring appropriate overnight supplies and toiletries, a sleeping bag, and pillow. Bags and pillows may also be rented for an additional charge, though Premium tents come with a queen size bed and two cots. Guests ages 21 and over may purchase beer and wine.
