The Richest People in North Carolina

The 33rd annual "Forbes Richest 400 Americans" list has just been released, and three North Carolinian people make the list. All of our state's members on the list slipped a little form their previous 2013 Forbe's ranking, but only by a few spots each. Here's a look at the richest people to call North Carolina home. Two of the richest are from Cary, NC, and found their fortune in the same software company, while one calls Charlotte home, and made his wealth through good old fashioned investing. You may not know his names, but there's a good chance you know the products that made him rich. Goodnight owns SAS software, which is one of the world's largest private software companies. The company is known for its excellent working conditions, from a 35 hour workweek to an onsite day care for children. Goodnight owns SAS with another man on this list - John Sall.

Sall owns 1/3 of SAS software with Goodnight owning the other 2/3. The two men met at North Carolina State University and also own Prestonwood Country Club and the Umstead Hotel & Spa in Cary, North Carolina. They also founded a private school in the area - the Cary Academy.

Clemmie Spangler Jr.

Clemmie "Dick" Spangler took over his father's failing bank - the Bank of North Carolina and merged it with North Carolina National Bank. That bank would later merge again with Bank of America, making Mr. Clemmer a rich man. Today, he's one of the largest individual Bank of America shareholders. The housing market started to rebound in 2012, increasing demand for products from Clemmie Spangler Jr.'s building and construction supply company National Gypsum.
