What We Like
Unique design stands out
Quickly absorbs water
What We Don't Like
Doesn’t dry well on sand
Very lightweight; needs anchor on windy days
Not large enough for very tall people
Your swimsuit isn’t the only fashion piece for a trip to the beach. Between your hat, your flip-flops, and your shades, you have several opportunities to have a little fun with accessories. Beach blankets are no exception. With so many options for oversized towels, blankets, and other beach-ready rugs available today, we wanted to see if this 59-inch round beach blanket from Ricdecor would be comfortable but resilient enough for a day in the sun. We took the towel to the shore for a test, evaluating it for texture, material, and design, and packability. Read on to see if this microfiber blanket deserves space in your beach bag.
Material and Weave: Thin microfiber
If you’re expecting a thick, high-pile plush blanket, you won’t find it here. This blanket is thinner than most, but that does help it dry remarkably well. In our tests, hanging the blanket up, either on the back of a chair or over a cooler, led to the fastest drying time. Leaving it on the sand prevents air from getting around it, meaning it stays moist against the ground.
Thin blankets aren’t renowned for their absorbency. This one, however, is made of microfiber and did a great job at quickly wicking water off our skin when we plopped down after a splash in the sea. Compared to weighted blankets, this one is prone to take off with a gust of wind, so we had to find a way to keep it on the ground when the beach breezes were strong.
If you’re planning to pack this beach blanket in a suitcase, you’ll appreciate how well it rolls up and tucks away into a corner of your bag. Many blankets are bulky, but the thin microfiber material makes this a more appropriate travel companion. Though it is large once it’s spread out, it’s quite small in a beach tote, too. Just be careful to fold the tassels into the fabric to keep zippers from snagging and ripping them.
This blanket is thinner than most, but that does help it dry remarkably well.
Texture: Soft and smooth
Microfiber is a remarkably soft material, so this beach blanket delivers on texture. Against bare skin, it’s gentle, which is great if you let your skin get a bit too red in the sun. It also helps blunt the sand’s sharper pieces. The tassel trim is a bit thick and bulky, and one tester found it uncomfortable against her skin.
Washing: Sturdy and holds up well
Some beach blankets and towels break down after the first wash. The fabric becomes coarser or sheds immensely. After three washes in the washing machine, we noticed a bit of pilling, but the quality of the fabric remained intact. The blanket also did not lose its absorbency or quick-drying nature.
Design: Attractive and unique
Whether you match your beach blanket to your swimsuit or just want to focus on an option that’s comfortable for a day’s worth of use, the intricate design of this beach blanket is quite unique. Shades of blue, teal, and green elicit thoughts of soothing ocean water, and the white background keeps cool in the bright sun. The round blanket is trimmed with tassels for a touch of whimsy. On a beach filled with bold shades and big prints, this beach towel is refined and distinctive.
Against bare skin, it’s gentle, which is great if you let your skin get a bit too red in the sun.
If the scroll pattern of this design doesn’t do anything for your beach style, you can pick from a few other styles. The palm leaf print with ruby pink flowers is particularly stunning, but pick whatever suits your beach look.
Price: A bit more than the typical towel, but great for two people
This blanket is a bit more expensive than the average beach blanket or oversized towel, but it still comes in at a bargain price (around $20) that’s easily justified by the high-quality look, soft feel, and versatile uses.
If you have a larger family, you might find bigger blankets that are a similar price but offer more surface area. This one fits one or two comfortably.
Competition: Ricdecor Mandala Microfiber Large Round Beach Blanket vs. Scuddles Handy Mat
For larger groups, a fold-out blanket like the Scuddles Handy Mat may be a better choice than the Round Beach Blanket from Ricdecor. The Scuddles option, which we also tested, starts out in a compact 10.5 x 15-inch bundle that’s secured in place by a weighted flap and hook and loop fasteners. (No bags that are easily lost amid beach gear!) When it’s unfolded, it measures 55 x 60 inches, which is slightly longer but narrower than the Ricdecor. We thought the Scuddles was better suited for a family.
Shades of blue, teal, and green elicit thoughts of soothing ocean water, and the white background keeps cool in the bright sun.
The Scuddles mat also offers a dual-layer construction: The waterproof PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate) backing keeps sand and moisture from seeping through to the top of the blanket. (This also helps prevent mold growth in storage.) The upper fabric is a soft but durable woven polyester fleece.
The Ricdecor round beach blanket does double as a towel (or cover on windy days). The Scuddles mat won’t work well as a blanket, but it could be used in a variety of other settings, from outdoor concerts to picnics.
