The Chateau de Montreuil restaurant is a real treat and ticks all the boxes for those after a top meal. The hotel is lovely; there are gardens to stroll around, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, and the cooking from the chef-owner, Christian Germain, well deserves the Michelin star it has earned. The best ingredients, including vegetables and herbs from the chateau garden, are used for dishes such as sole with mussels, puree of celery in a beer foam and duck with cloves. The set lunch menus are from 28 euros and are worth the journey alone. The 3-course a la carte menu is 78 euros and the Chef's Tasting menu is a surprise fabulous culinary journey through seven small courses costing 100 euros.

On the square opposite the Coq Hotel, this jolly restaurant is cosy, with red tablecloths, pictures on the walls and an impressive array of caps belonging to the owner, Jean Vernay, who's a great rugby fan. Traditional favorites like turbot with a Hollandaise sauce, snails in garlic cream, and duck as a main dish, suit both visitors and locals who fill the restaurant. Best to book in advance.
Menus from 16 euros for lunch, and 21 to 38 euros for dinner.

The restaurant has two well-deserved Michelin stars and a growing reputation. Alexandre Gauthier has upped the ante with a cooking style that reflects current preoccupations with experiments in flavors and cooking methods. But the inherent tastes and textures in dishes like ravioli with lobster cooked with green mangoes, or whiting in a warm golden crust with lime and capers, are not sacrificed. This is serious cooking, very well done.

The dining room is shaped like a forge and there are saddle leather seats; the decor matching the fireworks in the cooking.
